Agostino Beltrano
Agostino Beltrano (died 1665) was an Italian painter active in the Baroque period in his native city of Naples. He was a pupil of Massimo Stanzione, the uncle of his wife, and is known to have been active in 1646. He is said to have murdered his 36-year-old wife and painter, Aniella di Beltrano (also known as Aniella di Rosa), in a fit of jealousy. He died in Naples. Life and Work He was born in Naples between 1614 and 1618. The few news we have of his life derived largely from De Dominici, who says he was a student of M. Stanzione. Beltrano married a painter, also a pupil of the Stanzione, Anna (Annella, Diana, Dianella) de Rosa, nephew of Pacecco de Rosa; their sons Nicola Tomaso and Agnese Chiara were baptized in the parish of S. Maria della Carità respectively on 21 December 1638 and on 19 July 1640. Baroque
The Baroque (, ; ) is a style of architecture, music, dance, painting, sculpture, poetry, and other arts that flourished in Europe from the early 17th century until the 1750s. In the territories of the Spanish and Portuguese empires including the Iberian Peninsula it continued, together with new styles, until the first decade of the 19th century. Santi Apostoli, Naples
Santi Apostoli is a Baroque-style church in Naples, Italy. Legend holds that a church at the site was built atop a Temple of Mercury by Emperor Constantine. Restored by the Caracciolo Family, it was ceded in 1570 to the Theatine Order. By 1590, the adjacent cloister and monastery was designed by Francesco Grimaldi. In the early 17th century was reconstructed by Giacomo Conforti. In 1638, the work was continued by Bartolomeo Picchiatti. In the 19th century, the Theatine order was suppressed and the church turned over in administrations. An earthquake damaged the dome. The church now belongs to the Liceo Artistico Statale di Napoli. The counter-facade and ceiling panels were frescoed by Giovanni Lanfranco in the 1640s. Santa Maria Degli Angeli A Pizzofalcone
Santa Maria degli Angeli a Pizzofalcone is a Baroque-style church in Naples, Italy. A church, designed by Francesco Grimaldi, was built at the site for the Theatine Order. Construction started in 1587 and was completed in 1610. The interior is decorated with paintings by Giordano, and Andrea Vaccaro. The central nave and transept ceilings were frescoed ''Scenes from the Life of the Virgin'' (1668-1675) by Giovanni Battista Beinaschi. The Cupola was frescoed with a ''Coronation of the Virgin''. Some of these frescoes suffered damage from aerial bombing during the second World War. Francesco Maria Caselli painted the large canvases in the apse and transept. In the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception is a canvas depicting the Virgin by Massimo Stanzione, while Giovanni Bernardo Azzolino decorated the first and third chapels on the left side. Bolognese School
The Bolognese School of painting, also known as the ''School of Bologna'', flourished between the 16th and 17th centuries in Bologna, which rivalled Florence and Rome as the center of painting in Italy. Its most important representatives include the Carracci family, including Ludovico Carracci and his two cousins, the brothers Agostino and Annibale Carracci. Later, it included other Baroque painters: Domenichino and Lanfranco, active mostly in Rome, eventually Guercino and Guido Reni, and Accademia degli Incamminati in Bologna, which was run by Lodovico Carracci. The Basilica of Santa Maria della Sanità is a basilica church located over the Catacombs of San Gaudioso, on a Piazza near where Via Sanità meets Via Teresa degli Scalzi, in the Rione of the Sanità, in Naples, Italy. The church is also called San Vincenzo or San Vincenzo della Sanità, due to the cult of an icon of San Vincenzo Ferrer, also called locally O' Monacone (the big monk). Santa Maria Donna Regina Vecchia
Santa Donna Regina Vecchia is a church in Naples, in southern Italy. It is called ''Vecchia'' ("old") to distinguish it from the newer and adjacent church of Santa Maria Donna Regina Nuova. The earliest mention of a church on this site is from the year 780 in a reference to the nuns of the church of ''San Pietro del Monte di Donna Regina''. At that time, the church was quite near the old eastern city wall. The nuns were of the Basilian order and, when that order left Naples in the beginning of the 9th century, took Benedictine vows. In 1264, Pope Gregory IX gave the nuns permission to join the Franciscan order. Santa Maria della Verità (once called Sant'Agostino degli Scalzi or Santa Maria dell'Oliva) is a church in rione Materdei, in the quartiere of Stella of Naples, Italy.
