Agness, Oregon
Agness is an unincorporated community in Curry County, Oregon, United States. It is near the confluence of two Wild and Scenic rivers—the Lower Rogue and the Illinois. Agness post office was established October 16, 1897. It was named after Agnes, the daughter of the first postmaster, and subsequently misspelled. The Agness area is popular for fishing and hiking. Agness is in the Rogue River–Siskiyou National Forest and was threatened by the Biscuit Fire in 2002. Agness is served by one of only two rural mail boat routes still operating in the U.S. The other is along the Snake River in eastern Oregon. The mail boat runs on the Rogue River between Gold Beach and Agness. Rogue River Ranch, east of Agness, is on the National Register of Historic Places, and it and Lucas Lodge in Agness are in the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office historic sites database. Rogue River–Siskiyou National Forest
The Rogue River–Siskiyou National Forest is a United States National Forest in the U.S. states of Oregon and California. The formerly separate Rogue River and Siskiyou National Forests were administratively combined in 2004. Central Curry School District
Central Curry School District 1 (CCSD) is a public school district headquartered in Gold Beach in Curry County, Oregon, United States. Its boundary, in Curry County, includes Gold Beach, Nesika Beach, Pistol River, and Wedderburn as well as the surrounding area. It also includes the remote community of Agness. History CCSD was formed in 1997 when four elementary school districts and one high school district were merged, because of an action by the Oregon State Legislature that required districts without a kindergarten through twelfth grade (K-12) educational program to merge into a single district that did offer such a program. The Köppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems. Illahe, Oregon
Illahe is an unincorporated community and the site of a former post office in Curry County, Oregon, United States. Located along the Rogue River about upriver from Agness, the area was home to Takelma Indians, then to white and Karok settlers, before becoming part of a designated wilderness. In the 21st century, it is a stopping place for hikers, boaters, and other visitors. The area has a riverside lodge and a nearby campground, both named Illahe. Illahe is located in the Klamath Mountains in the Rogue River – Siskiyou National Forest. The Lower Rogue River Trail, a National Recreation Trail runs roughly parallel to the river between Grave Creek and Illahe through the Wild Rogue Wilderness. Rogue River Ranch
The Rogue River Ranch is a pioneer farm complex in Curry County in southwest Oregon, United States. The ranch is located on the north shore of the Rogue River just outside the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. The original ranch buildings were constructed by George Billings. Later, the ranch was sold to Stanley Anderson, who increased the size of the property and built additional farm buildings. The Bureau of Land Management bought the ranch in 1970. Today, the main ranch house is a museum. The Bureau of Land Management also maintains a campground on the property. The Rogue River Ranch is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Gold Beach, Oregon
Gold Beach (Tolowa: yan-shu’-chit, yan-shuu-chit’-dvn) is a city in and the county seat of Curry County, Oregon, United States, on the Oregon Coast. The population was 2,241 at the 2020 census. History The community was originally named Ellensburg in the 1850s, but later took the name Gold Beach after a beach near the mouth of the Rogue River where hundreds of placer mines extracted gold. An Ellensburg post office was established in 1853, changed to Ellensburg in 1877, and changed to Gold Beach in 1890.
