Afro-American Sons And Daughters
The Afro-American Sons and Daughters Hospital, in Yazoo City, Mississippi, also known as the Afro-American Hospital, was built in 1928. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. The Afro-American Sons and Daughters was a fraternal organization in Mississippi and one of the leading black voluntary associations in the state. Organized in 1924, it had 35,000 members by the 1930s. The founder of the group was Thomas J. Huddleston, Sr., a prosperous black entrepreneur and advocate of Booker T. Yazoo City, Mississippi
Yazoo City is a U.S. city in Yazoo County, Mississippi. It was named after the Yazoo River, which, in turn was named by the French explorer Robert La Salle in 1682 as "Rivière des Yazous" in reference to the Yazoo tribe living near the river's mouth. It is the county seat of Yazoo County and the principal city of the Yazoo City Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is part of the larger Jackson–Yazoo City Combined Statistical Area. According to the 2010 census, the population was 11,403. The most important industry in 2021 is a group of federal prisons. Lloyd Tevis Miller
Lloyd Tevis (L.T.) Miller (1872–1951) was an American physician who was the first medical director of the Afro-American Hospital in Yazoo City, Mississippi, the first private hospital for blacks in the state. He was also a co-founder of the Mississippi Medical and Surgical Association. Early life and education Miller was born in Natchez, Mississippi on December 6, 1872, the son of Washington Miller, a hackman (or cabdriver) and his wife, Emily, who worked at the Melrose Mansion in Natchez. He parents sent him to St. Louis for high school. He returned home for undergraduate studies and received his bachelor degree from Natchez College. In 1893, he received his MD from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. Mike Espy
Alphonso Michael Espy (born November 30, 1953) is an American lawyer and politician who served as the 25th United States Secretary of Agriculture from 1993 to 1994. He was both the first African American and first person from the Deep South to hold the position. A member of the Democratic Party, Espy previously served as the U.S. representative for Mississippi's 2nd congressional district from 1987 to 1993. In March 2018, Espy announced his candidacy for the United States Senate seat being vacated by Thad Cochran. Espy placed second in the November 6 nonpartisan special election before facing Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith in a November 27 runoff.
