Since 2013 the event has been contested on an annual basis. The tournament is also acts as a qualifying event for the Rugby World Cup Sevens and Olympic Rugby Sevens as required. Rugby sevens (commonly known simply as sevens, and originally seven-a-side rugby) is a variant of rugby union in which teams are made up of seven players playing seven-minute halves, instead of the usual 15 players playing 40-minute halves. Rugby sevens is administered by World Rugby, the body responsible for rugby union worldwide. The game is popular at all levels, with amateur and club tournaments generally held in the summer months. 2012 African Sevens Championship
The 2012 African Sevens was an international rugby sevens competition organized by the Confederation of African Rugby. It was the fourth edition of the African Sevens, which had been held every four years since the year 2000, and served as the African continental qualifier for the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens.
