Affirmed Stakes (LATC)
The Affirmed Stakes is a Grade III American thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old horses over a distance of miles on the dirt held at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California in late-June. The race currently offers a purse of $100,000. History The inaugural running of the event was on 30 June 1979 at Hollywood Park Racetrack as the Silver Screen Handicap at a distance of miles and was won by the promising three year old Valdez who won by 10 lengths, which continues to be the longest winning margin in the event. The event inherited the grading classification which was Grade II from the Argonaut Handicap which some sources believe is the predecessor to the event. However, the former Hollywood Park Media Guide management organization and the current Santa Anita management consider the event to have no connection. Santa Anita Park is a Thoroughbred racetrack in Arcadia, California, United States. It offers some of the prominent horse racing events in the United States during early fall, winter and in spring. Robert A. Baffert (born January 13, 1953) is an American racehorse trainer who trained the 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah and 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify. Baffert's horses have won a record six Kentucky Derbies, seven Preakness Stakes, three Belmont Stakes, and three Kentucky Oaks. Corey S. Nakatani (born October 21, 1970 in Covina, California, United States) is an American Thoroughbred horse racing jockey. He got his big break in 1990 when he rode Itsallgreektome to win big stakes races. Nakatani has long resided on the Southern California circuit of Santa Anita Park, Hollywood Park, and Del Mar racetrack. Martin Garcia (born October 23, 1984 in Veracruz, Mexico) is a Mexican jockey in American Thoroughbred horse racing based in Southern California. Gimme Da Lute
Gimme Da Lute (March 13, 2012 – November 6, 2015) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse and graded stakes winner. Career Gimme Da Lute won his first race in his second start at age three. After that he won the Echo Eddie Stakes then followed that with third-place finishes in the Chick Lang and Pat Day Mile Stakes. He got his first big stakes victory in the Affirmed Handicap after which he won the Los Alamitos Derby, the most important victory in his career. Gimme Da Lute only ran two more times after that with wins in the Real Good Deal Stakes for California-bred 3-year-olds, and the El Cajon Stakes. Death After he won the El Cajon, Gimme Da Lute suffered a hind leg fracture while working out at Santa Anita Park. A week later he underwent surgery that at first seemed to be successful. Battle of Midway (January 30, 2014 – February 23, 2019) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse best known for his upset victory in the 2017 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. He also finished third in the 2017 Kentucky Derby before winning the Affirmed Stakes and Shared Belief Stakes that year. Joseph "Joe" Talamo (born January 12, 1990 in Marrero, Louisiana) is a Champion jockey in American Thoroughbred horse racing. Born and raised in Marrero on the West Bank of the Mississippi River, within the Greater New Orleans Metropolitan area, Joe Talamo was influenced by a father who worked in horse racing as an assistant trainer. Mucho Gusto (foaled April 26, 2016) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 2020 Pegasus World Cup. Racing Career Mucho Gusto's first race was on September 20, 2018 at Los Alamitos Race Course where he came in first. His next race was the Grade 3 Bob Hope Stakes, on November 17, 2018, where he also came in first. He finished his 2018 season with a second place finish at the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity.
