Russell Baze
Russell Avery Baze (born 7 August 1958 ) is a retired horse racing jockey. He holds the record for the most race wins in North American horse racing history, and is a member of the United States Racing Hall of Fame and the State of Washington Sports Hall of Fame. Family background Born to an American family, Baze's father, Joe Baze, is a former jockey and trainer who was competing at Exhibition Park in Vancouver at the time of his birth giving him dual Canadian/American citizenship. Riding career Baze began his racing career in Walla Walla, Washington in 1974 and won his first race that fall at the Yakima racetrack. By the early 1980s he was making a name for himself, winning racing titles at northern California racetracks including a victory in the 1981 California Derby. Baze went on to lead United States thoroughbred horse racing in victories ten times. Jockey
A jockey is someone who rides horses in horse racing or steeplechase racing, primarily as a profession. The word also applies to camel riders in camel racing. The word "jockey" originated from England and was used to describe the individual who rode horses in racing. They must be light, typically around a weight of 100-120 lb., and physically fit. They are typically self-employed and are paid a small fee from the horse trainer and a percentage of the horse's winnings. Jockeys are mainly male, though there are some well-known female jockeys too. The job has a very high risk of debilitating or life-threatening injuries. Etymology The word is by origin a diminutive of ''jock'', the Northern English or Scots colloquial equivalent of the first name ''John'', which is also used generically for "boy" or "fellow" (compare ''Jack'', ''Dick''), at least since 1529. Oklahoma Derby
The Oklahoma Derby is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for three years olds, over a distance of miles (9 furlongs) on the dirt held annually late September at Remington Park located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The event currently carries an offered purse of $400,000. History The inaugural running of the event was on 18 March 1989 as the Remington Park Derby held over the miles distance and was won by the Oklahoma bred Clever Trevor in a time 1:43.00. Clever Trevor would later win the Grade I Arlington Classic and Remington Park would have a Black Type Stakes named after him. The event was moved to the late summer early fall schedule in 1997. Sunshine Millions Classic
The Sunshine Millions Classic is an American race for thoroughbred horses held annually in January at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California and at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. Part of the eight-race Sunshine Millions series, half of the races are run at one track, and half at the other. The "Classic" is open to horses four-years-old and older willing to race one and one-eighth miles on the dirt. It is a restricted event currently offering a purse of $250,000. The Sunshine Millions series races are restricted to horses bred either in Florida or in California. Lost In The Fog Stakes
The Lost in the Fog Stakes is an American ungraded stakes run at Golden Gate Fields in Albany, California for Thoroughbred two-year-old horses. A five-furlong sprint, the race is named in honor of Lost in the Fog, the brilliant sprinter who made his name between 2004 and 2006 before dying of lymphoma at age four. The California Oaks is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually in February at Golden Gate Fields in Berkeley, California. Open to three-year-old fillies, it is contested on Tapeta Footings synthetic dirt over a distance of a mile and a sixteenth (8.5 furlongs).
