Advertising Standards Authority (South Africa)
The Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (abbreviated ASA) was an independent entity organised and financed by members of the marketing communications industry of South Africa. Its purpose was to manage South Africa's voluntary, self-regulating system of advertising. The ASA worked with a variety of marketing communication industry stakeholders to ensure that advertising content in the country met the requirements of its Code of Advertising Practice and to control advertising content in the South African public's interest. The ASA of South Africa's Code of Advertising Practice was based on the Consolidated ICC Code of Marketing and Advertising Communication Practice prepared by the International Chamber of Commerce. The Advertising Regulatory Board (ARB) is an independent entity organised and financed by members of the marketing communications industry of South Africa. Its purpose is to manage South Africa's voluntary, self-regulating system of advertising. History In 2018, the ARB was founded after the forced liquidation of the Advertising Standards Authority (South Africa), Advertising Standards Authority of South Africa (ASA). It superseded the ASA in terms of the Electronic Communications Act in administering the Code of Advertising Practice. In 2021, the ARB signed a Memorandum of understanding, Memorandum of Understanding with the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa to escalate broadcast licensee issues related to advertising. The South African Press Association (SAPA) was the national news agency of South Africa until its closure in 2015. History The agency was established on 1 July 1938 by major South African newspapers to facilitate the sharing of news. Reuters had dominated the internal supply of news in South Africa until 1938. When SAPA was founded, Reuters retained the exclusive right to supply it with world news. Reuters ended this partnership in 1995, when it began expanding its own Southern African activities in competition with SAPA.
