Parmigianino
Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola (11 January 150324 August 1540), also known as Francesco Mazzola or, more commonly, as Parmigianino (, , ; "the little one from Parma"), was an Italian Mannerist painter and printmaker active in Florence, Rome, Bologna, and his native city of Parma. His work is characterized by a "refined sensuality" and often elongation of forms and includes ''Vision of Saint Jerome'' (1527) and the iconic if somewhat anomalous ''Madonna with the Long Neck'' (1534), and he remains the best known artist of the first generation whose whole careers fall into the Mannerist period. His prodigious and individual talent has always been recognised, but his career was disrupted by war, especially the Sack of Rome in 1527, three years after he moved there, and then ended by his death at only 37. Kunsthaus Zürich
The Kunsthaus Zürich is in terms of area the biggest art museum of Switzerland and houses one of the most important art collections in Switzerland, assembled over the years by the local art association called '. The collection spans from the Medieval art, Middle Ages to contemporary art, with an emphasis on Swiss art. Architecture The old museum part was drawn-up by architects Karl Moser and Robert Curjel and opened in 1910. ''Nativity'' or ''Rest on the Flight into Egypt'' is a c.1521–1522 oil on panel painting by Parmigianino, now in the Courtauld Gallery in London. Its attribution as a youthful work by Parmigianino has not always been unanimous, being supported by Freedberg (1950), Ghidiglia Quintavalle (1963, 1968) and Di Giampaolo (1991) and opposed by Berenson (1907), Venturi (1926), Fröhlich-Bum (1921) and Copertini (1932, assigning it instead to Bertoia). Recent scholarship has tended to accept it by comparison with other early works such as ''Adoration of the Shepherds (Parmigianino), Adoration of the Shepherds'', with the exception of Rossi (1980), who according to Di Giampaolo argued it was a copy. The Courtauld Gallery () is an art museum in Somerset House, on the Strand in central London. It houses the collection of the Courtauld Institute of Art, a self-governing college of the University of London specialising in the study of the history of art. Antonio Allegri da Correggio (August 1489 – 5 March 1534), usually known as just Correggio (, also , , ), was the foremost painter of the Parma school of the High Italian Renaissance, who was responsible for some of the most vigorous and sensuous works of the sixteenth century. In his use of dynamic composition, illusionistic perspective and dramatic foreshortening, Correggio prefigured the Baroque art of the seventeenth century and the Rococo art of the eighteenth century. Bucranium
Bucranium (plural ''bucrania''; Latin, from Greek ''βουκράνιον'', referring to the skull of an ox) was a form of carved decoration commonly used in Classical architecture. The name is generally considered to originate with the practice of displaying garlanded, sacrificial oxen, whose heads were displayed on the walls of temples, a practice dating back to the sophisticated Neolithic site of Çatalhöyük in eastern Anatolia, where cattle skulls were overlaid with white plaster. Etymology and sphere of application The word "bucranium" (latin ''bucranium'') comes from Ancient Greek: βουκράνιον - being composed of βοῦς (''ox'') and κρανίον (''skull'') - and literally means "ox skull". It is painted with frescoes by Correggio in the vault (697x645 cm) and over the fireplace. History Giovanna Piacenza, in her first decade as abbess of the monastery, ordered improvements and decorations. In 1514, the vault of her private apartment was decorated by Alessandro Araldi, with biblical and mythological subjects.
