Adobe Walls, Texas
Adobe Walls is a ghost town in Hutchinson County, northeast of Stinnett, in the U.S. state of Texas. It was established in 1843 as a trading post for buffalo hunters and local Native American trade in the vicinity of the Canadian River. It later became a ranching community. Historically, Adobe Walls is the site of two decisive battles between Native Americans and settlers. In November 1864 First Battle of Adobe Walls, Native Americans successfully repelled attacking troops led by Kit Carson. Ten years later, on June 27, 1874, known as the Second Battle of Adobe Walls, civilians at the Adobe Walls trading post successfully fought off an attack by a war party of mainly Comanche and Cheyenne warriors led by the Comanche chief Quanah Parker. The second battle led to a military campaign which resulted in Indian relocation to Indian Territory. Stinnett, Texas
Stinnett ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Hutchinson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,881 at the 2010 census, a decrease from 1,936 at the 2000 census. History Stinnett was established in 1926 by A.P. (Ace) Borger, better known as the founder of Borger, a larger community in the county, and his brother Lester Andrew (Pete) Borger. In September 1926, Stinnett replaced Plemons, which later became a ghost town, as the Hutchinson County seat. The courthouse, built in 1927 in the Spanish Renaissance style, was financed from petroleum money. The structure, designed by the architect W.F. Townes, consists of brown brick and cut white stone. Plains Apache
The Plains Apache are a small Southern Athabaskan group who live on the Southern Plains of North America, in close association with the linguistically unrelated Kiowa Tribe. Today, they are centered in Southwestern Oklahoma and Northern Texas and are federally recognized as the Apache Tribe of Oklahoma. Name The Plains Apache are also known as the Kiowa Apache, Naʼisha, or Na i sha Tindé, meaning "thieves" as the old meaning. Plemons, Texas
Plemons is a ghost town in Hutchinson County, in the U.S. state of Texas. It is located 10 miles southeast of Stinnett, and northeast of Borger, on Plemons Road, just north of the junction of County Road R. Establishment In 1898, Oklahoma rancher James Andrew Whittenburg filed on four sections of land in Hutchinson County, where he built a dugout shelter near the Canadian River. He used the acreage as the family homestead. In 1901, Whittenburg donated acreage from the homestead land for the establishment of a town. When Barney Plemons filed for land there, the town was named for him. Plemons became the county seat in 1901 when Hutchinson County was organized. E. E. Akers built the courthouse. Economy Mattie Sams was appointed the first postmaster when Plemons received its post office on May 29, 1901. The post office was in operation until 1952. William Dixon (September 25, 1850 – March 9, 1913) was an American Reconnaissance, scout and buffalo hunter, bison hunter active in the Texas Panhandle. He helped found Adobe Walls, Texas, Adobe Walls, fired a buffalo rifle shot at the Second Battle of Adobe Walls, and for his actions at the "Buffalo Wallow Fight" became one of eight civilians ever to receive the U.S. Medal of Honor. Early life Dixon was born in Ohio County, West Virginia, Ohio County in the panhandle region of West Virginia, on September 25, 1850. Of European descent, he was orphaned at age 12 and lived with an uncle in Missouri for a year before setting out on his own.
