Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary
Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary (ADS) is a marine protected area in the Australian state of South Australia located on the east coast of Gulf St Vincent in and adjoining the north-western part of the Adelaide, covering the estuary of the Port River around Port Adelaide and northwards past St Kilda. It was established in 2005 for the protection of a resident population of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (''Tursiops aduncus''). The dolphins are keenly watched by dolphin enthusiasts, as well as being a tourist attraction, touted as the only city in the world with wild dolphins living in it. Background Dolphin expert Mike Bossley lobbied for the sanctuary from the mid-1990s, becoming interested after reading about a dolphin that swam along next to racehorses being exercised in the water off West Beach, further down the coast. Port Adelaide is a port-side region of Adelaide, approximately northwest of the Adelaide city centre, Adelaide CBD. Port Gawler, South Australia
Port Gawler is a locality and former port on Gulf St Vincent on the central Adelaide Plains in South Australia. Port Gawler is located north west of Adelaide in the Adelaide Plains Council local government area at the mouth of the Gawler River. Port Gawler was named in 1867 and a government town surveyed around 1869, but was officially declared to have ceased to exist on 23 June 1960. The boundaries for the modern locality were created for the long established name in June 1997, incorporating both the former government town and the private subdivision of Milner. Dry Creek, South Australia
Dry Creek is a mostly industrial suburb north of Adelaide, containing significant wetlands. A substantial area was devoted to salt crystallisation pans until 2014, with plans to redevelop the site for housing. This housing plan, first put forward in 2008, was revived in 2013, for a proposed 10,000 homes. Salt production ceased in 2014, and in 2016 Ridley Corporation, which managed the salt pans, sold the land to Adelaide Resource Recovery. Description It is named for the Dry Creek, a stream and drain which flows through the suburb and into Swan Alley, a tidal distributary of Barker Inlet, Gulf St Vincent. It was the site of the soapworks of W. H. Buckland Park is a suburb on the northern rural outskirts of Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia. Port Wakefield Road, the main highway north from Adelaide, passes the eastern boundary. Bolivar is an outer northern suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the City of Salisbury. History The suburb was established in 1956, and was named after the ''General Bolivar Hotel''. This hotel had been built by Walter Walpole, a settler who had arrived in South Australia in 1850 on the sailing ship ''Bolivar''. Bolivar Post Office in the then rural area opened on 1 July 1905 and closed in 1930. Torrens Island Conservation Park (formerly Torrens Island National Park Reserve and Torrens Island Wild-life Reserve) is a protected area in the Australian state of South Australia located on Torrens Island in the Adelaide metropolitan area about north-northwest of the state capital of Adelaide and about north-northeast of Port Adelaide. Port Gawler Conservation Park (formerly Port Gawler National Park) was a protected area in the Australian state of South Australian located at the east side of Gulf St Vincent on the west side of the locality of Port Gawler, South Australia, Port Gawler. The conservation park covered an area of intertidal mangroves immediately south of Port Gawler beach. The conservation park consists of land in Section 483 in the Hundred of Port Adelaide and Section 616 of the Hundred of Port Gawler. The land first received protected area status as the Port Gawler National Park proclaimed on 11 February 1971 under the ''National Parks Act 1966''. Protected areas or conservation areas are locations which receive protection because of their recognized natural, ecological or cultural values. There are several kinds of protected areas, which vary by level of protection depending on the enabling laws of each country or the regulations of the international organizations involved. Generally speaking though, protected areas are understood to be those in which human presence or at least the exploitation of natural resources (e.g. firewood, non-timber forest products, water, ...) is limited. Lefevre Peninsula
The Lefevre Peninsula is a peninsula located in the Australian state of South Australia located about northwest of the Adelaide city centre. It is a narrow sand spit of about running north from its connection to the mainland. The name given to the peninsula by the traditional owners of the area, the Kaurna people, was Mudlangga, meaning "nose-place" in the Kaurna language.
