Adelaide Conroy
Adelaide Conroy née Anceschi (born 1839) was a Malta-based photographer active between 1871 and 1879. Adelaide was born on 23 April 1839 to Pompilio Anceschi and Rosa Bolondi in Reggio d'Emilia, Italy. Together with James Conroy his first wife Sara, their newborn Jane, Richard Ellis, Adelaide came to Malta from Messina on 9 April 1861 on a ship called Capitole. On 17 May 1872 in the Anglican Cathedral, Valletta Adelaide married the then widowed photographer James Conroy. Richard Ellis (Maltese Photographer)
Richard Ellis (27 January 1842 – 23 December 1924) was a British-Maltese photographer who was one of the pioneers of photography in Malta during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in St. Luke's, East London, he travelled throughout Europe as a circus performer before settling down in Malta at the age of nineteen. Within a few years he had opened a studio in Valletta, and he became a renowned photographer. His archive of tens of thousands of photographs still exists, and his work is significant for both its historic value and technical quality. His work is now in the public domain according to the law of Malta. Early life Ellis was born on 27 January 1842 in St Luke's, London to James and Sarah Ellis, who at that time already had 5 children and later would have 7 more. St Paul's Pro-Cathedral (Malti: ''Il-Pro-Katridral ta' San Pawl''), officially The Pro-Cathedral and Collegiate Church of Saint Paul, is an Anglican pro-cathedral of the Diocese in Europe situated in Independence Square, Valletta, Malta. A "pro-cathedral" is a church with cathedral status though not being the main cathedral. It is one of three cathedrals of the Anglican Diocese of Gibraltar in Europe. Origin and construction The cathedral was commissioned by the Dowager Queen Adelaide during a visit to Malta in the 19th century when she found out that there was no place of Anglican worship on the island. Prior to this Anglican services were held in a room in the Grand Master's Palace. Built on the site of the Auberge d'Allemagne (the conventual home of the German Knights Hospitaller), the cathedral was designed by William Scamp and was built between 1839 and 1844.
