Acuff, Texas
Acuff is an unincorporated farming community in northeastern Lubbock County, Texas, United States. It is part of the Lubbock Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The town is named for Michael S. Acuff, who arrived in the area in 1891. Acuff's first school was constructed in 1902 and the town had a post office from 1903 to 1912. In 1942, the Acuff school consolidated with, and is currently served by, the Roosevelt Independent School District. During the 1940s Baptists and Methodists shared the same church and the population swelled from (no figures available) to 50 people in the 1950s. The current estimated population is 30. The Maines family, of which Lloyd Maines and his daughter Natalie Maines are most notable, has its roots in the Acuff area. Hispanic journalist Bidal Aguero was born in Acuff in 1949. Caprock Escarpment
The Caprock Escarpment is a term used in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico to describe the geographical transition point between the level High Plains of the Llano Estacado and the surrounding rolling terrain. In Texas, the escarpment stretches around south-southwest from the northeast corner of the Texas Panhandle near the Oklahoma border. The escarpment is especially notable, from north to south, in Briscoe, Floyd, Motley, Crosby, Dickens, Garza, and Borden Counties. In New Mexico, a prominent escarpment exists along the northernmost extension of the Llano Estacado, especially to the south of San Jon and Tucumcari, both in Quay County, New Mexico. Dixie Chicks
The Chicks (previously known as Dixie Chicks) are an American country music band from Dallas, Texas. Since 1995, the band has consisted of Natalie Maines (lead vocals, guitar) and sisters Martie Maguire (vocals, fiddle, mandolin, guitar) and Emily Strayer (vocals, guitar, banjo, Dobro). Bidal Aguero
Merlot is a dark blue–colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. Natalie Maines
Natalie Louise Maines (born October 14, 1974) is an American singer. She is the lead vocalist for the all-female country band The Chicks. In 1995, after leaving Berklee College of Music, Maines was recruited by the Dixie Chicks to replace their lead singer, Laura Lynch. With Maines as lead vocalist, the band earned 10 Country Music Association Awards and 13 Grammy Awards for their work between 1998 and 2007. Lloyd Wayne Maines (born June 28, 1951) is an American country music record producer, musician and songwriter. He was inducted into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame as one of the first three members, the other two being Willie Nelson and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
