Arthur Gardiner Butler F.L.S., F.Z.S. (27 June 1844 – 28 May 1925) was an English entomologist, arachnologist and ornithologist. He worked at the British Museum on the taxonomy of birds, insects, and spiders. Biography Arthur Gardiner Butler was born at Cheyne Walk, Chelsea, London. Noctuidae
The Noctuidae, commonly known as owlet moths, cutworms or armyworms, are a family of moths. They are considered the most controversial family in the superfamily Noctuoidea because many of the clades are constantly changing, along with the other families of the Noctuoidea. It was considered the largest family in Lepidoptera for a long time, but after regrouping Lymantriinae, Catocalinae and Calpinae within the family Erebidae, the latter holds this title now. Currently, Noctuidae is the second largest family in Noctuoidea, with about 1,089 genera and 11,772 species. ''Acontia'' is a genus of moths of the family Noctuidae. The genus was named by Ferdinand Ochsenheimer in 1816. ''Eusceptis'', ''Pseudalypia'' and ''Spragueia'' are sometimes included in the present genus, but here they are tentatively treated as different pending further research. Many species of ''Tarache'' were also once placed here (see #Former species, below). Description Palpi long, porrect (extending forward) and met by a short sharp frontal tuft. Third joint prominent.
