Acid House Kings
Acid House Kings are a Swedish indie pop band. They were founded in 1991 by Joakim Ödlund (also in the bands Poprace, Double Dan, and Starlet) and brothers Niklas (Red Sleeping Beauty) and Johan Angergård (Club 8, The Legends, Poprace). History With the release of their first album, ''Pop, Look & Listen'', they supposedly decided on a 10-year plan to release an album every five years to have a trilogy of albums released by the year 2002, a plan that eventually worked out exactly as scheduled. According to plan, they released ''Advantage Acid House Kings'' in 1997 and the album proved to be a huge step forward to form their trademark sound of jangly, catchy guitar oriented indie-pop. The album featured Julia Lannerheim as guest vocalist on a couple of songs, who eventually joined the band officially as a full-time member in 2001. Twee Pop
Twee pop is a subgenre of indie pop that originates from the 1986 ''NME'' compilation ''C86''. Characterised by its simplicity and perceived innocence, some of its defining features are boy–girl harmonies, catchy melodies, and lyrics about love. For many years, prominent independent record labels associated with twee pop were Sarah Records (in the UK) and K Records (in the US). Characteristics The definition of twee is something "excessively or affectedly quaint, pretty, or sentimental", supposedly born from a childish mispronunciation of the word sweet. A retrospective fascination with the genre in the US saw Americans eagerly defining themselves as twee. According to ''The A.V. Labrador Records
Labrador Records is a Sweden-based record label, specializing in indie pop and the twee subgenre. History Labrador was founded by Bengt Rahm in 1997 in Malmö, modeled on niche British record companies and Swedish fanzines like A Zero One and Benno. One of the first bands to be signed was the Swedish group Club 8. Club 8 member Johan Angergård had previously run the Summersound Recordings record company together with members of the band Acid House Kings. Eventually, Summersound and Labrador joined under the moniker Labrador Records and the new company's headquarters were transferred to Stockholm. Johan Angergård was responsible for "everything that had to do with the music" while the graphic designer Mattias Berglund handled covers, websites, and posters. Shelflife Records
Shelflife Records is a Portland and San Francisco based independent record label run by Ed Mazzucco and Matthew Bice and has produced such bands as Days, Acid House Kings, and The Radio Dept. History Shelflife Records traces its 1995 origins to a bedroom in a southern California suburb, where it began in conjunction with a mail order and distribution service. A fan of 1980s English pop and inspired by labels such as Factory and Sarah Records, Ed Mazzucco launched the label as a way to expose foreign indie pop groups to US audiences. Shelflife's first release was the August 1996 compilation ''Whirl-Wheels'' which included tracks by Club 8, Boyracer, La Buena Vida, and Ed's own band The Autocollants. Club 8
Club 8 is a Swedish musical group consisting of Karolina Komstedt (from the band Poprace) and Johan Angergård (Acid House Kings, Poprace). History Formed in 1995, Club 8 were signed to the Spanish record label Siesta. They released a single called "Me Too" and an album called ''Nouvelle'' with an twee pop sound. In 1998, their second album, ''The Friend I Once Had'', and the single "Missing You" were released. "Missing You" became a club and radio hit in Spain and somewhat of a college radio favorite in the US. The band started playing live. Their first gig was in New York at a March Records CMJ event in 1999. Their sound had by now developed into a more bossa nova and dance-oriented one. In 2001, Club 8's sound moved toward chill-out and trip hop on their third, self-titled album. The Legends (Swedish Band)
The Legends are a Swedish pop band whose music is distributed by Lakeshore Records in the US, by Labrador in Sweden, and by Little Teddy in Germany. The band was formed in January 2003, and a week later, a gig was booked, supporting The Radio Dept. in Stockholm. The Legends received international acclaim for their debut album, ''Up Against the Legends'', released in 2003. Allmusic described it as characterized by melodic songwriting reminiscent of both the 1980s, the UK's ''C86'' movement, as well as 1960s American pop-rock, and summarized the album as "the kind of stunning debut that makes you excited about the possibilities of pop music."
