Achan Sobin S. Namto
Achan Sobin S. Namto ( th, พระอาจารย์โสบิน ส. นามโท) is a Buddhist monk who has taught Vipassana meditation and Buddhist psychology in Southeast Asia and North America for over 50 years. Biography Born in Thailand on December 11, 1931, Sobin S. Namto became a novice monk in 1945 at Wat Mahathat in Bangkok, under Abbot Somdej Phra Budthacharn, and began his study of Vipassanā there. He was sent to Rangoon, Burma (now Yangon, Myanmar), for further study and then taught in Thailand. In 1960-62, he taught in Luang Prabang, Laos. Returning to Thailand, he resumed teaching and founded the Vidhayakorn Institute in Southern Thailand, He was one of the monks selected to establish the first Thai temple in Los Angeles, California, and was appointed its first Abbot. Amphoe Borabue
Borabue ( th, บรบือ, ) is a district (''amphoe'') in the central part of Maha Sarakham province, northeastern Thailand. Geography Neighboring districts are (from the north clockwise): Kosum Phisai, Mueang Maha Sarakham, Wapi Pathum, Na Chueak, and Kut Rang. History In 1897 the district was established, then named Patchim Sarakham (ปจิมสารคาม). In 1913 it was renamed Thakhon Yang (ท่าขรยาง). In 1914 the governor of Maha Sarakham granted the new name Borabue (at first spelled บ่อระบือ, later shortened to บรบือ). Vipassanā
''Samatha'' (Pāli; sa, शमथ ''śamatha''; ), "calm," "serenity," "tranquillity of awareness," and ''vipassanā'' (Pāli; Sanskrit ''vipaśyanā''), literally "special, super (''vi-''), seeing (''-passanā'')", are two qualities of the mind developed in tandem in Buddhist practice. In the Pali Canon and the Āgama they are not specific practices, but elements of "a single path," and "fulfilled" with the development (''bhāvanā'') of ''sati'' ("mindfulness") and '' jhana/dhyana'' ("meditation") and other path-factors. While ''jhana/dhyana'' has a central role in the Buddhist path, ''vipassanā'' is hardly mentioned separately, but mostly described along with ''samatha''.
