Acanthurus Japonicus
''Acanthurus japonicus'' is a tang from the Indo-West Pacific. It occasionally makes its way into the aquarium trade. It grows to a size of 21 cm in length. Peter Yulevich Schmidt
Peter Yulievich Schmidt (born 23 December 1872, St. Petersburg, died 25 November 1949, Leningrad) was a Russian and Soviet zoologist, ichthyologist and museum curator. Peter Yulievich Schmidt attended the gymnasium of KI May before studying at the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of St. Petersburg University, from where he graduated in 1895. He was engaged in the laboratory of Professor V.M. Shimkevich and V.T. Shevyakov. He travelled through Semirechiy in 1899-1902. In 1908-1910 he participated in the Kamchatka expedition of F. P. Ryabushinsky, where he headed the zoological department. In 1906, he was awarded with a gold medal named after Petr Petrovich Semyonov by the Imperial Russian Geographical Society. From 1906 to 1930 he held the position of a professor at the Agricultural Institute in St. Petersburg (Leningrad) and from 1914 to 1931 he worked at the Zoological Museum of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Tang (fish)
Acanthuridae are the family of surgeonfishes, tangs, and unicornfishes. The family includes about 86 extant species of marine fish living in tropical seas, usually around coral reefs. Many of the species are brightly colored and popular in aquaria. Morphology The distinctive characteristic of the family is that they have scalpel-like modified scales, one or more on either side of the peduncle of the tail. The spines are dangerously sharp and may seriously injure anyone who carelessly handles such a fish. The dorsal, anal, and caudal fins are large, extending for most of the length of the body. The mouths are small and have a single row of teeth adapted to grazing on algae. Surgeonfishes sometimes feed as solitary individuals, but they often travel and feed in schools. Feeding in schools may be a mechanism for overwhelming the highly aggressive defense responses of small territorial damselfishes that vigorously guard small patches of algae on coral reefs. Green Island, also known by other names, is a small volcanic island in the Pacific Ocean about off the eastern coast of Taiwan. It is at high tide and at low tide, making it the seventh-largest island in Taiwan Area. ''Acanthurus'' is a genus of fish in the family Acanthuridae found in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Ocean.
