Academic Hospital Paramaribo (Dutch: ''Academisch Ziekenhuis Paramaribo'' or ''AZP'') is a hospital in Paramaribo, Suriname. With 465 beds, it is the largest hospital in Suriname. History The hospital was opened on 9 March 1966 as ''Centraal Ziekenhuis'' (Central Hospital), but changed its name in 1969 to Academic Hospital when the medical faculty of the Anton de Kom University of Suriname was founded. Paramaribo (; ; nicknamed Par'bo) is the capital and largest city of Suriname, located on the banks of the Suriname River in the Paramaribo District. Paramaribo has a population of roughly 241,000 people (2012 census), almost half of Suriname's population. The historic inner city of Paramaribo has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. Anton De Kom University Of Suriname
Anton de Kom University ( nl, Anton de Kom Universiteit van Suriname) is the only university in Suriname. It is located in the capital, Paramaribo, and named for Anton de Kom, an anti-colonialist activist who was killed by the Nazis while in exile in the Netherlands. History Founding Tertiary education in Suriname dates back to the 19th century. In 1882 there was already tertiary education provided at the Geneeskundige School and there also existed an organized juridical education (The Law-school), which was founded in the late forties. Furthermore, there were other para-university courses, namely the discipline to become a surveyor, dentist and pharmacist. At the centenary of the Estates of Suriname in 1966, this organization took the important decision to cooperate with the government of Suriname to found a university. s Lands Hospitaal is a hospital in Paramaribo, Suriname. The hospital started as a military hospital when it was established in 1760. Sint Vincentius Hospital
Sint Vincentius Hospital ( Dutch: ''Sint Vincentiusziekenhuis'') is a hospital in Paramaribo, Suriname. It is Catholic hospital named after Saint Vincentius. History The hospital has its roots in a congregation of Sisters of Love from Tilburg who were deployed to Suriname in 1894. Out of the infirmary they started, the Sint Vincentius Hospital was founded in 1916, originally with a capacity of 70 beds. With the passing of time the hospital became more professional and shifted its focus from charity to professional medical care. The hospital was expanded in 1964, 1976 and 1978. In 1970, the foundation running the hospital was transformed from a church body into a board of lay people. Diakonessenhuis (Paramaribo)
Diakonessenhuis is a hospital in Paramaribo, Suriname. It was founded as the Protestant hospital of Paramaribo. History In 1946 a foundation was set up to start a Diakonessenhuis in Paramaribo, but only when the director of the Diakonessenhuis in Utrecht, dr. M.A. van Melle, took over the initiative in 1955 and contacted the Dutch public broadcaster NCRV did developments grow more seriously. In 1960 a fundraising show was broadcast on television which generated more than 2 million Dutch guilders. Together with a large donation from and a low interest loan of the same amount, there was enough money to build a hospital. In late 1961 construction was started, and the hospital eventually opened on 30 November 1962. Mungra Medical Centre (Dutch: ''Mungra Medisch Centrum'' or ''MMC'') is a hospital in Nieuw-Nickerie, Suriname. It was the first hospital in Suriname outside of Paramaribo. History On 31 March 1907, the government set up a commission to upgrade the infirmary in Nickerie to a hospital. This became known as the s Lands Ziekenhuis Nickerie'', which was located in Margarethenburg, not too far from Nieuw-Nickerie. Due to its remote location, small size and problems with flooding, it was decided in the 1950s to close it and open a new hospital on the Annastraat in Nieuw-Nickerie. The first stone was laid on 25 July 1956 and the hospital was eventually opened on 15 January 1959. On 7 March 1994, the hospital was named Lachmipersad Mungra Regional Hospital Nickerie after Lachmipersad Mungra, a physician and member of parliament from Nickerie. Nickerie District
Nickerie is a district of Suriname, on the north-west coast. Nickerie's capital city is Nieuw-Nickerie. Another town is Wageningen. The district borders the Atlantic Ocean to the north, the Surinamese district of Coronie to the east, the Surinamese district of Sipaliwini to the south and the region of East Berbice-Corentyne in Guyana to the west.
