Abukar Umar Adani
Abukar Umar Adani, also transcribed as Abukar Omar Adan, is a businessman from Mogadishu. He has been mentioned as the chief financial backer of the Islamic Courts Union. He hails from the Warsangali clan (a subclan of Abgaal). As of 2008, he lives in Djibouti having fled Somalia following the defeat of the ICU by Ethiopian forces. In September 2007, Adani rejected Prime Minister Ali Mohammed Ghedi's offer to return to Mogadishu and participate in the second round of the Somali National Reconciliation Conference, saying that he has no plans to return to Somalia until the Ethiopians leave. Islamic Courts Union
The Islamic Courts Union ( so, Midowga Maxkamadaha Islaamiga) was a legal and political organization formed to address the lawlessness that had been gripping Somalia since the fall of the Siad Barre regime in 1991 during the Somali Civil War. The Islamic Courts Union was embraced by a plurality of Somalis, as Islam was viewed as one of the last credible institutions left in the wake of the collapse of the state. The courts were able to quickly gain the trust of war weary Somalis, as they had emerged at a grassroots level and claimed to rule under the neutrality of Islam, which was viewed as an attractive alternative to the country rife with heightened clan tensions. Abgaal (Somali: Abgaal, Arabic: أبغال) is a subclan of the Hawiye and the even larger Samaale clan. It is one of the major Somali clans and has produced many prominent historical Somali figures including 3 presidents, and the father of the Somali military. Transitional National Government
The Transitional National Government (TNG) was the internationally recognized central government of Somalia from 2000 to 2004. Overview The TNG was established in April–May 2000 at the Somalia National Peace Conference held in Arta, Djibouti. The Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia (ARS) was a Somali political party. A successor to the Islamic Courts Union, it was launched in September 2007.
