Abkhazian Presidential Election, 2009
Presidential elections were held in Abkhazia on 12 December 2009, the fourth such elections since the post of President of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia was created in 1994. The result was a victory for incumbent president Sergei Bagapsh, who received 63% of the vote, winning a second term in office. Bagapsh competed against four opposition candidates: former vice president and prime minister Raul Khajimba, who came second behind Bagapsh in the 2004 presidential election, and newcomers Beslan Butba, Zaur Ardzinba and Vitali Bganba. Khajimba had stated that he, Ardzinba and Butba would support each other should one of them reach the second round of the election. Bagapsh was inaugurated on 12 February 2010. Sergei Bagapsh (Interfax)
Sergei Uasyl-ipa Bagapsh, ka, სერგეი ბაგაფში, russian: Сергей Васильевич Багапш, translit=Sergey Vasilyevich Bagapsh (4 March 1949 – 29 May 2011) was an Abkhaz politician who served as the second President of Abkhazia from 12 February 2005 until his death on 29 May 2011. He previously served as Prime Minister of Abkhazia from 1997 to 1999. He was re-elected in the 2009 presidential election. Bagapsh's term as Prime Minister included the 1998 war with Georgia, while he oversaw both the recognition of Abkhazia by Russia and the Russo-Georgian War during his presidency. Born in 1949 in Sukhumi, Bagapsh became a businessman following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, as well as a representative of Abkhazian interests in Russia. Aruaa
Aruaa ( ab, Аруаа; ) is a social organisation in Abkhazia uniting veterans of the 1992–1993 war with Georgia. It was founded on 10 May 2007. 534 people were present at its founding congress. The first Minister of Defence of Abkhazia Vladimir Arshba was unanimously elected Chairman of the organisation, and Vadim Smyr and Mukhamed Kilba were elected Vice Chairmen. Apart from Arshba, Smyr and Kilba, ten more people were elected into the Supreme Council: Sergei Matosian, Eduard Bulia, Slavik Kuchuberia, Adler Mikvabia, Vitaly Gabnia, Gennady Margani, Kachubei Avidzba, Chingiz Bigvava, Liana Achba and Mzia Beia. During the founding congress, the organisation was addressed by former President Vladislav Ardzinba. Some speakers regretted the fact that Amtsakhara, the veteran organisation founded shortly after the 1992-1993 war, had turned into a political organisation. Ochamchira District
Ochamchira District is a district of the partially recognised Abkhazia. Its capital is Ochamchire, the town by the same name. The district is smaller than the Ochamchire district in the de jure subdivision of Georgia, as some of its former territory is now part of Tkvarcheli District, formed by de facto Abkhaz authorities in 1995. The population of the Ochamchira district is 24,629 according to the 2003 census. Until the August 2008 Battle of the Kodori Valley, some mountainous parts of the district were still under Georgian control, as part of Upper Abkhazia. Communist Party Of Abkhazia
The Communist Party of Abkhazia (CPA) ( ab, Аԥсны Акомунисттә Апартиа; ka, აფხაზეთის კომუნისტური პარტია) is a political party in Abkhazia. The party leader is Lev Shamba. History The CPA was founded in March 1921 with the demand of a separate Abkhaz Soviet Republic. It was then led by Efrem Eshba. Eshba had formed a Bolshevik military-revolutionary committee in Sukhumi in the summer of 1918. Eshba's group demanded direct integration of Abkhazia into the Soviet Union. During the Soviet period, the CPA was a part of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. In 1988, the CPA demanded Abkhaz secession. Chernomorenergo
Chernomorenergo is a state-owned power company of Abkhazia. It is responsible for the distribution of electricity in Abkhazia and operates the Inguri hydroelectric power station. It is currently headed by Aslan Basaria. It is only Russian plant involved in ultra-high voltage bushing development, manufacturing, and testing. History In February 1995, the Ministry for Energy was transformed into the state company Abkhazenergo. The company's first Chairman was Khuta Jinjolia, who had previously been Minister for Energy. In June of the same year, it was renamed to Chernomorenergo and turned into a state-owned private company. Almasbei Kchach
Almasbei Ivanovich Kchach () was a former government member and vice-presidential candidate from Abkhazia who committed suicide when investigators came to arrest him in connection with an assassination attempt on President Alexander Ankvab. Political career under President Ardzinba On 2 June 1996, President Vladislav Ardzinba appointed Almasbei Kchach to succeed Givi Agrba as interior minister. Kchach had up until that point been head of Ardzinba's own security office. He remained in that position until 2 July 2001, when he was replaced by Supreme Court Judge Zurab Agumava. However, Kchach again became interior minister on 1 November after Agumava was appointed to head the State Security Service. Iakub Uasyl-Ipa Lakoba ( Abkhaz: ''Иакуб Уасыл-иԥа Лакоба''; ka, იაკუბ ლაკობას) was an opposition politician and former presidential candidate in the internationally unrecognised Republic of Abkhazia. Some called him the "Abkhaz Zhirinovsky". Early life and career Iakub Lakoba was born 1949 in New Athos. In 1966, he graduated from Sukhumi school No. 10. In 1971, Lakoba graduated from the Moscow State University's Faculty of Law. From 1972 to 1982 he worked under Bagrat Shinkuba in the staff of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of the Abkhazian ASSR. From 1974 onwards Lakoba held several positions with the Komsomol.
