Aberdeen Beach And Queens Links
Aberdeen Beach and Queens Links is located in Aberdeen, Scotland. The beach itself is famous for its golden sand and its long curved length between Aberdeen Harbour and the River Don's mouth. The beach suffers from significant erosion of the sand so there are distinctive groyne or walls, to help keep the sand in place. The beach is popular with walkers, surfers and windsurfers. Recently in an expensive million pound operation, sand was taken by ship from further down the coast to the south of Aberdeen and sprayed on the beach to replace some of the lost sand. Rocks were then placed in a v-shape formation to try to prevent erosion, much like the groyne. The actual park area is called Queens Links and takes the form of a large grassy area parallel to the beach. Beach Ballroom
The Beach Ballroom is an art deco building on the beach boulevard of Aberdeen, Scotland. It is home to one of Scotland's finest dance floors – famous for its bounce – which floats on fixed steel springs. It was built in 1926, and is a Category B listed building. Green Spaces And Walkways In Aberdeen
The Scottish city of Aberdeen has a number of green spaces and walkways. The parks, gardens and floral displays which include 2 million roses, 11 million daffodils and 3 million crocuses have led the city to win the Royal Horticultural Society's Britain in Bloom Best City award many times, including a period of nine years straight. Footdee
Footdee (Scots: Fittie) is an area of Aberdeen, Scotland known locally by its Scots language name of Fittie. It is an old fishing village at the east end of Aberdeen Harbour. The name is actually folk etymology. Far from being "Foot of the Dee/Fit o the Dee", it is actually a corruption of a former dedication to a "St Fittick". It has also been referred to as Fort Dee. The area has had a settlement as far back as the Medieval times and the first recorded reference to the area of Fittie was in the year 1398. This village was slightly further North than where Footdee is now located. It would have been near to where the St Clement's Church is located. Aberdeen Corporation Tramways formerly served the City of Aberdeen, Scotland. The system The city's tram system was the most northerly municipal tramway in the United Kingdom. It started on 26 August 1898 when the Aberdeen Corporation purchased the assets of Aberdeen District Tramways. The council paid the purchase price of £84,735 (), representing £15 per share, and they also took over the temporary loans amounting to £10,000 ()and the mortgages of £9,050 (). From 1906 to 1918 the system fell under the care of R. S, Pilcher who served as General Manager and Chief Engineer. Transition Extreme is a sports facility in Queens Links, Aberdeen. It is run by a charity. History Construction on the facility began in April 2006. The idea for Transition Skatepark and Extreme Sports Centre was conceived by Mr Neil Stevenson while he and his family lived in Houston, Texas between 2001-2003. Both of Mr Stevenson's children are avid skateboarders and, while in the US, had access to the world-class facilities offered by VANS skate parks and others. On returning to Aberdeen the subject of skateboarding facilities was extremely high profile with Aberdeen City Council, with several outdoor and temporary parks under discussion and a formal consultation underway between the Council and local enthusiasts. Beach Leisure Centre
The Beach Leisure Centre is a leisure centre located in Aberdeen, Scotland. It is operated by Sport Aberdeen. It is situated adjacent to Linx Ice Arena. History A leisure centre at the beach was being discussed by the council as early as 1979. The leisure centre opened in 1989. The centre was initially operated by Crossland Leisure. The flumes have not operated since the COVID-19 pandemic due to their poor condition. Codona's Amusement Park
Codona's Amusement Park is an amusement park based in Aberdeen, Scotland. It was established by the Codona Family in 1970 and is currently managed by the third generation of the family. It is situated adjacent to the Aberdeen Beach and Queens Links on the coast of the North Sea. History Francesco Codoni, a Swiss Italian from the Ticino region next to the Northern Italian border, immigrated to Scotland in the 1790s. Codoni's descendants worked in circuses throughout Europe, but the majority remained in Scotland.
