Aberdare RFC
Aberdare Rugby Union Football Club is a Welsh Rugby Union club based in the town of Aberdare in South Wales. Aberdare RUFC play in the Welsh Rugby Union Division Two East Central and is a feeder club for the Cardiff Blues. Club history The first mention of an Aberdare club came in 1876, when on 30/11/1876 Aberdare played away to Merthyr, losing by two tries. In September 1883 it was decided to "re-start" the Aberdare club. Aberdare RUFC began as Aberaman Rugby Football Club, a team formed in 1890, though the earliest written conformation of their existence is from a match in 1895 against a team from Ferndale. In the early 1900s the team joined the Glamorgan league, playing other coal mining towns such as Maesteg, Treorchy and Treherbert. In 1907 Aberdare were involved in an early rugby scandal linked to professionalism. Local collier Dai 'Tarw' Jones was one of Aberdare's star players and captained the club from 1905 to 1907. Aberdare
Aberdare ( ; cy, Aberdâr) is a town in the Cynon Valley area of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Wales, at the confluence of the Rivers Dare (Dâr) and Cynon. Aberdare has a population of 39,550 (mid-2017 estimate). Aberdare is south-west of Merthyr Tydfil, north-west of Cardiff and east-north-east of Swansea. During the 19th century it became a thriving industrial settlement, which was also notable for the vitality of its cultural life and as an important publishing centre. Etymology The name ''Aberdare'' means "mouth/confluence of the river dare", as the town is located where the Dare river ( cy, Afon Dâr) meets the Cynon ( cy, afon Cynon). While the town's Welsh spelling uses formal conventions, the English spelling of the name reflects the town's pronunciation in the local Gwenhwyseg dialect of South East Wales. Thomas Young (born 18 May 1992) is a Welsh rugby union player. A flanker, who plays rugby for Cardiff Rugby. Whilst under contract with the Cardiff Blues, he also played for Cardiff RFC and Pontypridd RFC. He is the son of former Wales international and former Wasps director of rugby Dai Young. Owen Williams (born 2 October 1991) is a former Welsh rugby union player. A centre, he played club rugby for Cardiff Blues regional team. Having previously been selected for the Wales national rugby sevens team, in May 2013 Williams was selected in the Wales national rugby union team 32-man training squad for the summer 2013 tour to Japan. He made his international debut against Japan on 8 June 2013 and maintained his place in the squad for Wales' Autumn internationals for 2013. David Wyn Evans
David Wyn Evans (born 1 November 1965) is a former international rugby union player who represented the Wales national team on twelve occasions between 1989 and 1995. He played club rugby for Cardiff RFC and Treorchy RFC. Evans joined Cardiff RFC in 1984. He made his international début in 1989 against France. He played in all four of Wales' matches during the 1990 Five Nations Championship. Evans was named as part of the 1991 Rugby World Cup squad, and played in one game during the tournament, as a replacement fly half against Australia. In 1992, Evans left Cardiff after playing 117 games for the club and joined Treorchy RFC. The move seemingly ended his international career, but he was named in Wales' 1995 Rugby World Cup squad, and played one final game for the national team during the tournament, against Japan. Keith Rowlands
Keith Alun Rowlands (7 February 1936 – 18 November 2006), was a Welsh international lock rugby union player and later administrator, who was the first chief executive officer of the International Rugby Board. Playing career Rowlands was born in Brithdir, Bridgend, the son of a Glamorgan Constabulary Police Inspector. After attending Cowbridge Grammar School, on his father's transfer to Aberdare, Rowlands entered the second year at Aberdare Boys' Grammar School and went on to captain both the rugby (1953–54) and cricket teams (1954 and 1955). He won a Welsh Secondary School Cap in 1955, playing against England at Cardiff. He graduated from University of London and served National Service with the 1st Battalion of The Welch Regiment from 1958 to 1960. Rowlands played for Aberaman and then London Welsh. Dai Young
David "Dai" Young (born 26 July 1967) is a Welsh rugby union coach and former rugby union and rugby league footballer. He was recently Director of Rugby at Premiership Rugby club Wasps but departed the club after initially stepping down from first team coaching in February 2020. He is now Director of Rugby at Cardiff Rugby. A prop, he won 51 caps for Wales in rugby union between 1987 and 2002, three caps for the British & Irish Lions, and 14 caps for Wales in rugby league. After retiring from playing, he first coached Cardiff Blues, before moving to the Wasps in 2011. He has also coached the Barbarians several times from 2008 to 2013. Welsh League
The Welsh League was the first club rugby league competition in Wales.Lush (1998), pg. 19 Its inaugural season was in 1908/09 when four additional teams were formed to join Ebbw Vale RLFC and Merthyr Tydfil RLFC, which allowed a league tournament to take place. The Welsh League ran for just two seasons, after three of the teams, Aberdare, Barry and Mid-Rhondda left the Northern Union and ceased playing rugby in the first season; followed by the collapse of Treherbert in 1910. Both seasons were won by Ebbw Vale.
