Abdellatif Ben Ammar
Abdellatif Ben Ammar ( ar, عبد اللطيف بن عمار; 25 April 1943 – 6 February 2023) was a Tunisian film director and screenwriter. Biography Born in Tunis on 25 April 1943, Ben Ammar studied mathematics at the . He then turned to cinema and earned a diploma in filmmaking from the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques in Paris in 1965. Upon his return to Tunisia, Ben Ammar was hired by the Tunisian Company for Cinematic Production and Expansion and began shooting short films and assisting Tunisian and foreign directors. In 1970, he released his first feature film, '' A Simple Story'', then founded the film studio Latif Productions alongside Abdellatif Layouni. He also founded a post-production company, Ben Duran. Ben Ammar died in Tunis on 6 February 2023, at the age of 79. The French protectorate of Tunisia (french: Protectorat français de Tunisie; ar, الحماية الفرنسية في تونس '), commonly referred to as simply French Tunisia, was established in 1881, during the French colonial Empire era, and lasted until Tunisian independence in 1956. The protectorate was established by the Bardo Treaty of 12 May 1881 after a military conquest, despite Italian disapproval. It was part of French North Africa with French Algeria and the Protectorate of Morocco, and more broadly of the French Empire. L'Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (IDHEC; the "Institute for Advanced Cinematographic Studies") is a French film school, founded during World War II under the leadership of Marcel L'Herbier who was its president from 1944 to 1969. Société Anonyme Tunisienne de Production et d'Expansion Cinématographique (SATPEC; en, Tunisian Company for Cinematic Production and Expansion) was a Tunisian film production company. History Habib Bourguiba, the president of Tunisia, created SATPEC in 1964 and inaugurated it in 1968. In 1966, SATPEC established Gammarth Studios to promote local film productions. Gammarth was completed in 1968 and originally only processed film in black and white until 1983 when it became equipped to process films in colour. During the 1970s, SATPEC had a monopoly on importing and producing foreign film in Tunisia. In 1973, SATPEC managed the newly re-opened Tunisian Cinémathèque. The Carthage Film Festival (CFF) is an annual film festival that takes place in Tunis and founded in 1966. It is also called by its abbreviation JCC, from its French name, , or by its Arabic title, (''Cinema Days of Carthage''). Initially biennial alternating with the Carthage Theatre Festival, the festival became an annual event in 2014. The Panafrican Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou (Festival panafricain du cinéma et de la télévision de Ouagadougou or FESPACO) is a film festival in Burkina Faso, held biennially in Ouagadougou, where the organization is based.
