Abbe Smith
Abbe Lyn Smith (born September 22, 1956) is an American criminal defense attorney and professor of law at Georgetown University Law Center. Smith is Director of the Criminal Defense and Prisoner Advocacy Clinic and Co-Director of the E. Barrett Prettyman Fellowship Program. Before joining the faculty at Georgetown Law, Smith worked as a public defender in Philadelphia for many years and she was also on the faculty at Harvard Law School. Professor Smith regularly writes and comments on criminal defense, the criminal justice system, criminal prosecution, legal ethics, and juvenile justice. Smith wrote a memoir about her experience of helping Patsy Kelly Jarrett earn her freedom from a conviction for which Jarrett maintained her innocence. Memoir
A memoir (; , ) is any nonfiction narrative writing based in the author's personal memories. The assertions made in the work are thus understood to be factual. While memoir has historically been defined as a subcategory of biography or autobiography since the late 20th century, the genre is differentiated in form, presenting a narrowed focus. National Juvenile Defender Center
The Gault Center, formerly the National Juvenile Defender Center or NJDC, is a nonprofit organization located in the United States that advocates for juvenile justice reform. NJDC changed names to The Gault Center in 2022. History The American Bar Association Juvenile Justice Center eventually grew into the National Juvenile Defender Center. In 2005, Patricia Puritz founded NJDC as a standalone organization. In May 2015, Kim Dvorchak succeeded Puritz as the executive director of NJDC. NJDC has advocated against the shackling of juveniles during court appearances and provides training for attorneys working with juveniles. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the NJDC argued for the release of detained juveniles for safety reasons. Ofra Bikel
Ofra Bikel (born in Israel) is a documentary filmmaker, and television producer. For more than two decades she was a mainstay of the acclaimed PBS series FRONTLINE producing over 25 award-winning documentaries, ranging from foreign affairs to critiques of the U.S. criminal justice system. She graduated from the University of Paris and the Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris. She was married briefly to actor and folk singer, Theodore Bikel. She was a researcher for ''Time'', ''Newsweek'', and ABC Television. She moved to public television, producing films for the WGBH series World and later for the long-running series ''Frontline''.
