Dave Douglas (trumpeter)
Dave Douglas (born March 24, 1963) is an American jazz trumpeter, composer, and educator. His career includes more than fifty recordings as a leader and more than 500 published compositions. His ensembles include the Dave Douglas Quintet; Sound Prints, a quintet co-led with saxophonist Joe Lovano; Uplift, a sextet with bassist Bill Laswell; Present Joys with pianist Uri Caine and Andrew Cyrille; High Risk, an electronic ensemble with Shigeto, Jonathan Aaron, and Ian Chang; and Engage, a sextet with Jeff Parker, Tomeka Reid, Anna Webber, Nick Dunston, and Kate Gentile. He has won a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Aaron Copland award, and received Grammy Award nominations. Greenleaf Music is an independent music company directed by American trumpeter and composer Dave Douglas. In addition to recordings on CD, vinyl, and digital formats, Greenleaf Music houses sheet music and podcasts, as well as supporting tours by its community of artists. Founded in 2005 by Douglas and Mike Friedman (of Premonition Records), Greenleaf Music has released albums by Dave Douglas, Donny McCaslin, Nicole Mitchell, Harrison Bankhead, Hamid Drake, Kneebody, Michael Bates, Curtis Robert Macdonald, Linda May Han Oh, Matt Ulery, Ryan Keberle, Rudy Royston, Greg Ward and Mareike Wiening. The Greenleaf Music podcast, A Noise From The Deep, has produced over 70 episodes. The label operates in New York and is distributed by Redeye Worldwide. ''Spirit Moves'' is the 29th album by trumpeter Dave Douglas. It was released on the Greenleaf Music label in 2009 and features Douglas band Brass Ecstasy. Spark Of Being
''Spark of Being'' is a 3-disc box set of music written by Dave Douglas and performed by his electric band, Keystone. Written for the Bill Morrison film by the same name, ''Spark of Being'' was commissioned by Stanford University and released by Douglas's Greenleaf Music record label in 2010. Background Stanford University commissioned Dave Douglas to write a soundtrack for Bill Morrison's Frankenstein film. Recording and music The musicians were part of Douglas's established sextet known as Keystone. In the studio, Douglas encouraged improvisation, so that he would have enough material to edit for release. The music "makes use of the library of sounds at Stanford University's computer music department, which DJ Olive weaves into the live palette of keyboard, bass, drums and Douglas himself on trumpet". Jim McNeely
Jim McNeely (born May 18, 1949) is a jazz pianist, composer, arranger and faculty. Biography Jim McNeely was born in Chicago, Illinois. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Illinois, and moved to New York City in 1975. In 1978, he joined the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Big Band. He spent six years as a featured soloist with that band and its successor, Mel Lewis and the Jazz Orchestra (now the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra). In 1981, he began a four-year tenure as pianist/composer with the Stan Getz Quartet. From 1990 until 1995, he was the pianist in the Phil Woods Quintet. In 1996, he re-joined the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra as pianist. He is still associated with the Vanguard Orchestra as composer-in-residence. From 1998 to 2002, McNeely was chief conductor of the DR Big Band in Copenhagen, Denmark. , he was chief conductor of the HR (Hessischer Rundfunk) Big Band in Frankfurt, Germany.
