''A Monster Calls'' is a play based on the low fantasy novel of the same name by Patrick Ness, from an original idea by Siobhan Dowd. The play was devised by the original company with Adam Peck as the writer in the room. Production history The play opened at the Bristol Old Vic from 31 May to 16 July, before transferring to The Old Vic, London from 7 July to 25 August 2018. Patrick Ness
Patrick Ness (born 17 October 1971) is an American-British author, journalist, lecturer, and screenwriter. Born in the United States, Ness moved to London and holds dual citizenship. He is best known for his books for young adults, including the ''Chaos Walking'' trilogy and ''A Monster Calls''. Ness won the annual Carnegie Medal in 2011 and in 2012, for ''Monsters of Men'' and ''A Monster Calls''. He is one of seven writers to win two Medals, and the second to win consecutively. He wrote the screenplay of the 2016 film adaptation of ''A Monster Calls'', and was the creator and writer of the ''Doctor Who'' spin-off series ''Class''. Siobhan Dowd (4 February 1960 – 21 August 2007) was a British writer and activist. The last book she completed, ''Bog Child'', posthumously won the 2009 Carnegie Medal from the professional librarians, recognising the year's best book for children or young adults published in the UK. She attended a Roman Catholic grammar school in south London and earned a BA Hons degree in Classics from Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University and an MA with distinction from Greenwich University in Gender and Ethnic Studies.
