ART X Lagos
ART X Lagos is an art fair in Lagos, Nigeria. It is the first international art fair in West Africa, founded and launched in 2016, and six editions have been held so far. The seventh edition of the fair will be held from 4 to 6 November 2022. Founding and character ART X Lagos was created in 2016 by Tokini Peterside, a Nigerian entrepreneur, to showcase and support the breadth of contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. It draws local patrons and a host of international collectors, curators, and critics annually. ART X Lagos is usually a four-day affair, featuring art galleries in Africa and the Diaspora showcasing established as well as emerging artists. The fair also includes a talks programme, ART X Talks, featuring local and international speakers, as well as interactive projects to engage its varied audiences, and live art and music performances. Zoé Whitley
Zoé Whitley (born 30 December 1979) is an American art historian and curator who has been director of Chisenhale Gallery since 2020. Based in London, she has held curatorial positions at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate galleries, and the Hayward Gallery. At the Tate galleries, Whitley co-curated the 2017 exhibition '' Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power'', which was described by '' ARTnews'' as one of the most important art exhibitions of the 2010s. Stacy M. Hardy is a writer, journalist, multimedia artist and theatre practitioner. Peju Alatise
Peju Alatise (born 1975) is a Nigerian artist, poet, writer, and a fellow at the National Museum of African Art, part of the Smithsonian Institution. Alatise received formal training as an architect at Ladoke Akintola University in Oyo State, Nigeria. She then went on to work for 20 years as a studio artist. Her work was exhibited at Venice Biennale’s 57th edition, themed ''Viva Arte Viva'' (Long Live Art). Alatise, along with two other Nigerian artists, Victor Ehikhamenor and Qudus Onikeku, were the first Nigerians to appear at the art exhibition. Her work was a group of life-size figures based on the life of a servant girl. Alatise was a recipient of the 2017 FNB Art Prize. Njideka Akunyili Crosby (born 1983) is a Nigerian-born visual artist working in Los Angeles, California. Through her art Akunyili Crosby "negotiates the cultural terrain between her adopted home in America and her native Nigeria, creating collage and photo transfer-based paintings that expose the challenges of occupying these two worlds". Ben Enwonwu
Odinigwe Benedict Chukwukadibia Enwonwu MBE (14 July 1917 – 5 February 1994), better known as Ben Enwonwu, was a Nigerian painter and sculptor. Arguably the most influential African artist of the 20th century, his pioneering career opened the way for the postcolonial proliferation and increased visibility of modern African art. He was one of the first African artists to win critical acclaim, having exhibited in august exhibition spaces in Europe and the United States and listed in international directories of contemporary art. Portia Zvavahera
Portia Zvavahera (born 1985) is a Zimbabwean painter. Early life Zvavahera was born in Zimbabwe. She studied at the BAT Visual Arts Studio at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe from 2003 to 2005 and obtained a diploma in visual arts from Harare Polytechnic in 2006, where she was taught by the Zimbabwean artist and printmaker Chiko Chazunguza. Babatunde Olatunji
Michael Babatunde Olatunji (April 7, 1927 – April 6, 2003) was a Nigerian drummer, educator, social activist, and recording artist. Early life Olatunji was born in the village of Ajido, near Badagry, Lagos State, in southwestern Nigeria. A member of the Ogu people, Olatunji was introduced to traditional African music at an early age. His name, Bàbátúndé, means 'father has returned', because he was born two months after his father, an Ogu (Egun) man, Zannu died, and Olatunji was considered to be a reincarnation. Boris Nzebo, born in Port-Gentil in 1979, is a visual artist who lives and works in Douala, Cameroon. Biography Boris Nzebo primary studies took place in Libreville in Gabon. Arriving in Cameroon, he began by custom painting signs for hairdressing and beauty salons. Then he gave that up to devote himself exclusively to art in the early 2000s.
