The England Boxing National Amateur Championships Super-Heavyweight Championship formerly known as the ABA Championships is the primary English amateur boxing championship. James Oyebola
James Oyebola (10 June 1961 – 27 July 2007) was a Nigerian and British heavyweight boxer who won a bronze medal at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in the super heavyweight division. Oyebola was the British heavyweight champion from 1994 to 1996. Oyebola was born in Lagos, Nigeria. Standing 6 ft 10 in (2.08 m) tall, with a reach of 85 inches (2.16 m), he fought in the orthodox stance and won 18 of his 23 fights, 16 by knock out, losing four and drawing one. He was pronounced brain dead after injuries sustained by gunshot wounds to his head after a nightclub altercation. He was based in Paddington during his career. The England Boxing National Amateur Championships previously known as the ABA Championships is the premier boxing tournament hosted annually by England Boxing. The Championships are 'open' class: any Boxing, boxer who is registered with a club registered with England Boxing (aged over 17 years by the 1 October) can enter. History The inaugural Championships were held (over one day) on 18 April 1880 at St James Hall, London at four weight categories: Featherweight (57 kg), Lightweight (60 kg), Middleweight (75 kg), and Heavyweight (91 kg). 1884 saw the introduction of a fifth weight category (Bantamweight, 54 kg). John McDermott (boxer)
John McDermott (born 26 February 1980) is an English former professional boxer who competed from 2000 to 2013. He is a three-time challenger for the British heavyweight title and in his last fight in March 2013, won the English heavyweight title. Professional career On 18 April 2008, McDermott won the vacant BBBofC English heavyweight title, knocking out Pele Reid in the second round. He had fought for the same title in 2004 losing on that occasion to Mark Krence. In September 2007, he had also become the mandatory challenger for a second shot at the British title after beating Scott Gammer on points over 10 rounds. He had fought for the title once before in December 2005 losing in the 1st round to Matt Skelton. Frazer Clarke (born 7 August 1991) is a British professional boxer. He won bronze in Tokyo at the 2020 Summer Olympics. In December 2015, he won the super heavyweight division at the Rio 2016 test event. In 2016, he was ultimately overlooked for Olympic qualification in favour of fellow super heavyweight boxer Joe Joyce (who went on to claim the silver medal in Rio 2016); however, he did make the British Lionhearts squad for their maiden WSB final against the Cuba Domadores and won his match against Lenier Pero, thereby denying the Domadores what would have otherwise been a 10–0 whitewash. Simon Vallily (born 15 August 1985) is an English professional boxer. As an amateur, he was a member of the England elite squad as well as the Great British podium squad and won gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Vallily was born to English father and Jamaican mother. Amateur career Fighting for the South Bank Amateur boxing club in Middlesbrough, Vallily was formerly on the books of Middlesbrough Football Club until disciplinary issues meant that his career in football ended prematurely.
