A897 Road
The A897 single track road is entirely within the Highland council area of Scotland. It runs generally north from the A9 at Helmsdale to the A836 near Halladale Bridge, east of Melvich. The road passes through or near Kildonan, Kinbrace and Forsinard, and has a junction with the B871 at Kinbrace. It also passes through Achiemore. Helmsdale is on the east-facing North Sea coast of Britain. Melvich is about 40 miles (64 km) away, on the north-facing Atlantic coast. Apart from half a mile (1 km) or so within Helmsdale, the entire road is single track. Between Helmsdale and Kinbrace the road is in Strath Ullie (known also as Strath of Kildonan). Helmsdale
Helmsdale ( sco, Helmsdal, gd, Bun Ilidh) is a village on the east coast of Sutherland, in the Highland (council area), Highland council area of Scotland. The modern village was planned in 1814 to resettle communities that had been removed from the surrounding straths as part of the highland clearances, Highland Clearances. Toponymy The River Helmsdale (Scottish Gaelic, Gaelic ''Ilidh'') was noted by Geographia, Ptolemy as ''Ila'', which remains an obscure name. The Gaelic name for the village, ''Bun Ilidh'', means ''Ilie-foot''. Norsemen, Norse settlers called the strath ''Hjalmundal'', meaning ''Dale of the Helmet'', from which the modern village name ''Helmsdale'' is derived. Forsinard
Forsinard ( ) is a hamlet in the county of Sutherland in the Highland area of Scotland. It is located on the A897 road in Strath Halladale. It is served by a railway station on the Far North Line. The local hotel closed several years ago, but there is now a b&b just across the level crossing. Forsinard is situated in the Flow Country, an area of peat bog which straddles the borders of Caithness and Sutherland. The Fosinard estate was purchased in 1977 by Basil Baird. The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds runs a nature reserve and a visitor centre at Forsinard. The Forsinard Flows national nature reserve attracts a large range of birds and wildlife. Rail transport Forsinard Railway Station lies on the picturesque Far North Line, located north of Kinbrace and south of Altnabreac. It was opened by the Highland Railway on 28 July 1874. Strath Halladale
Strath Halladale is a strath in the traditional county of Sutherland in the north of Scotland down which the Halladale River flows to enter the Atlantic Ocean at Melvich Bay. It is followed by the A897 road between Forsinard and just short of Melvich where it joins the A836 north coast road, just east of Halladale Bridge, the lowest road crossing of the river. The headwaters of the river gather within The Flows National Nature Reserve and head northwest towards Forsinard. The flow is soon joined by the left bank tributaries of the Catsack and Ewe burns. The main tributary is the left-bank River Dyke or Abhainn Bheag which joins just south of the twin settlements of Trantlemore and Trantlebeg on the west and eastern sides of the valley respectively. River Ullie
The River Helmsdale (sometimes known as the River Ullie) ( gd, Ilidh / Abhainn Ilidh) is one of the major east-flowing rivers of Sutherland in the Highlands of Scotland. It flows broadly southeastwards from Loch Badanloch down the Strath of Kildonan (otherwise known as Strath Ullie), gathering the waters of the Bannock Burn on its left and the Abhainn na Frithe on its right before discharging into the Moray Firth on the North Sea at the town of Helmsdale. Strath Ullie
Strath of Kildonan, also known as Strath Ullie, ( gd, Srath Ilidh), is a strath in Sutherland, in the north of Scotland. It extends in a north-westerly direction from Helmsdale towards Kinbrace. History In 1813, during the Highland Clearances, a group of 50-60 men planned an ambush from the settlement of Suisgill in the Strath of Kildonan against a number of men who were employed by the Sutherland Estate in evicting tenants to make way for sheep farming. The estate men who were on horseback were tipped off in advance but were still pursued by the 50-60 men on foot, who as historian James Hunter described, had acted "just as their ancestors had done when launching one of the charges characteristic of clan warfare". Although the men on horse back escaped, another small group who were employed by the Sutherland Estate to carry out evictions as part of the Highland Clearances were caught in the Strath of Kildonan and surrounded by a mob of about 100 people. Achiemore, Strath Halladale
Achiemore is a hamlet in Strath Halladale in Sutherland, in the Highland council area of Scotland. Achiemore is situated to the north of Smigel Burn on the right bank of the Halladale River just beyond where the Allt an Tigh-choinneirnh flows and Upper Bighouse. The village and station of Forsinard is 15 km to the south, and Melvich, on the north coast, is roughly 4.5 miles (7 km) to the north. Culfern is just to the north and contains ruins. The A897 road passes through Achiemore. Achiemore contains the Strath Halladale Mission Church, a Grade C listed building which is dated to 1845. Kinbrace
Kinbrace is a small village in Sutherland in the Highland council area of Scotland. It lies at the junction of the A897 and B871 and is from Helmsdale by road. The village has a station on the Far North Line (also named Kinbrace). Few people live in the village, with the population standing at 51 in the 2011 Census. The village is represented in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom constituency of Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, where it is represented by Jamie Stone of the Scottish Liberal Democrats.
