East Kildonan, Winnipeg
East Kildonan is a primarily residential community in northeast Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. Commonly known by its initials EK, the suburb has a population of approximately 35,800 as of the 2016 Census. East Kildonan is bounded from the Red River on the west, to Panet Road, north of Blantyre Avenue, and the Canadian Pacific Railway Marconi tracks (removed in 2006) on the east; and the lane between Larsen and Harbison Avenues on the south, to Oakland Avenue on the north. It is mainly a working- and middle-class community, though there are poorer pockets south of Munroe Avenue and more affluent areas along the Red River and west of Henderson Highway, East Kildonan's major thoroughfare. There is a small industrial area located between Watt Street and the CPR tracks. East Kildonan is considered part of the western half of the River East community area. North Kildonan, Winnipeg
North Kildonan is a city ward in northern Winnipeg, and a former municipality in Manitoba, Canada. Its population was of 2016 was 44,664. History What is now North Kildonan was originally part of the Rural Municipality of Kildonan. In 1914, the rural municipality was divided into the Rural Municipalities of West Kildonan and East Kildonan. The East Kildonan community at the time, however, was at odds with one another: the southern part was interested in development and was investing heavily towards expanding civic services; the north, on the other hand, was a rural enclave of just 1000 people, with many of its farms dating back to the Selkirk Settler period. With the north seeking to split off, a petition to the provincial government called for the further division of East Kildonan. As result, on 1 January 1925, the northern portion became incorporated as the Rural Municipality of North Kildonan. West Kildonan is a residential suburb within the Old Kildonan and Mynarski city wards of Winnipeg, Manitoba, lying on the west side of the Red River, and immediately north of the old City of Winnipeg in the north-central part of the city. Old Kildonan
Old Kildonan is the northernmost city ward of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Before the ''City of Winnipeg Act'' of 1972, it was an independent unincorporated municipality called the Municipality of Old Kildonan; prior to that, from 1914, it was a subdivision of the Rural Municipality of Kildonan. It is bounded by the north limit of the City of Winnipeg on the north; by the CP Winnipeg Beach railway, slightly past McPhillips Street, on the east; Brookside Boulevard (Winnipeg Route 90) on the west; and by Inkster Boulevard ( Route 23) on the south. The ward falls within the community area of Seven Oaks and is served by the Seven Oaks School Division. Its population was 47,155 as of the 2016 census. Kildonan (Manitoba Electoral District)
Kildonan was a provincial electoral division in the Canadian province of Manitoba. The boundaries for the riding maintained their location through the 2008 redistribution. History Kildonan riding (1870–1899) The original Kildonan riding was created at the time of the province's establishment in 1870. It was dominated by Manitoba's "old settler" population (i.e., English-speaking families who had lived in the Red River Settlement for many years before the province's creation). There was a large "mixed blood" aboriginal population in the riding, and many of its residents were also of Scottish or partly Scottish ancestry. From 1886 to 1888, the riding was incorporated into "Kildonan and St. Paul" riding. Kildonan was a hotly contested riding between the Conservatives and Liberals following the establishment of party government in 1888. Strath Of Kildonan
Strath of Kildonan, also known as Strath Ullie, ( gd, Srath Ilidh), is a strath in Sutherland, in the north of Scotland. It extends in a north-westerly direction from Helmsdale towards Kinbrace. History In 1813, during the Highland Clearances, a group of 50-60 men planned an ambush from the settlement of Suisgill in the Strath of Kildonan against a number of men who were employed by the Sutherland Estate in evicting tenants to make way for sheep farming. The estate men who were on horseback were tipped off in advance but were still pursued by the 50-60 men on foot, who as historian James Hunter described, had acted "just as their ancestors had done when launching one of the charges characteristic of clan warfare". Although the men on horse back escaped, another small group who were employed by the Sutherland Estate to carry out evictions as part of the Highland Clearances were caught in the Strath of Kildonan and surrounded by a mob of about 100 people.
