A-12 Avenger II
The McDonnell Douglas/General Dynamics A-12 Avenger II was a proposed American attack aircraft from McDonnell Douglas and General Dynamics. It was to be an all-weather, carrier-based stealth bomber replacement for the Grumman A-6 Intruder in the United States Navy and Marine Corps. Its ''Avenger II'' name was taken from the Grumman TBF Avenger of World War II. The development of the A-12 was troubled by cost overruns and several delays, causing questions of the program's ability to deliver upon its objectives; these doubts led to the development program's cancellation in 1991. The manner of its cancellation was contested through litigation until a settlement was reached in January 2014. Design and development ATA program The United States Navy began the Advanced Tactical Aircraft (ATA) program in 1983. The program was to develop and field a replacement for the A-6 Intruder by 1994. Stealth technology developed for the United States Air Force would be used heavily in the pro ...

British NVC Community A12 (Potamogeton Pectinatus Community)
This article gives an overview of the aquatic communities in the British National Vegetation Classification system. Introduction The aquatic communities of the NVC were described in Volume 4 of ''British Plant Communities'', first published in 1995, along with the swamps and tall-herb fens. In total, 24 aquatic communities have been identified. The aquatic communities fall into the following six groups: * four communities of the water surface and sub-surface, in which duckweeds and/or Frogbit are the constant species; these communities ( A1, A2, A3 and A4) are found in moderately-rich to eutrophic standing waters * eight free-floating or rooted and submerged, pondweed communities ( A5, A6, A11, A12, A13, A14, A15 and A21) * six communities in which rooted water-lilies and pondweeds with floating leaves are the constant species ( A7, A8, A9, A10, A19 and A20) * three communities in which water-crowfoots and/or starworts are the constant species ( A16, A17 and A ...

English Opening
The English Opening is a chess opening that begins with the move: :1. c4 A flank opening, it is the fourth most popular and, according to various databases, one of the four most successful of White's twenty possible first moves. White begins the fight for the by staking a claim to the d5-square from the wing, in hypermodern style. Although many lines of the English have a distinct character, the opening is often used as a transpositional device in much the same way as 1.Nf3 – to avoid such highly regarded responses to 1.d4 as the Nimzo-Indian and Grünfeld Defences — and is considered reliable and flexible. The English derives its name from the leading 19th century English master Howard Staunton, who played it during his 1843 match with Saint-Amant and at London 1851, the first international tournament. It did not inspire Staunton's contemporaries and caught on only in the twentieth century. It is now recognised as a opening that may be used to reach both classical an ...

LSWR A12 Class
The A12 locomotives of the London and South Western Railway were built between the years 1887 and 1895 to the design of William Adams. Ninety of the locomotives were built, fifty at Nine Elms Works and forty by Neilson and Company, although the latter together with the final twenty from Nine Elms were officially known as the O4 class. They were unusual for their time, with a wheel arrangement of 0-4-2. This arrangement was used by few of the other railway companies and never proved popular (although the Great Northern Railway had 150 such locomotives). They bore the nickname "Jubilees", because the first batch appeared in the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria's reign. History The 90 members of the class were built in batches, as shown in the following table. All 90 passed to the Southern Railway in 1923, following the introduction of the Grouping Act. Withdrawal Withdrawals started in 1928, with four of the class surviving to Nationalisation. The four operated by British Ra ...

Rhodopsin-like Receptors
Rhodopsin-like receptors are a family of proteins that comprise the largest group of G protein-coupled receptors. Scope G-protein-coupled receptors, GPCRs, constitute a vast protein family that encompasses a wide range of functions (including various autocrine, paracrine, and endocrine processes). They show considerable diversity at the sequence level, on the basis of which they can be separated into distinct groups. GPCRs are usually described as "superfamily" because they embrace a group of families for which there are indications of evolutionary relationship, but between which there is no statistically significant similarity in sequence. The currently known superfamily members include the rhodopsin-like GPCRs (this family), the secretin-like GPCRs, the cAMP receptors, the fungal mating pheromone receptors, and the metabotropic glutamate receptor family. There is a specialised database for GPCRs. Function The rhodopsin-like GPCRs themselves represent a widespread protein ...

A-12 Shrike
The Curtiss A-12 Shrike was the United States Army Air Corps' second monoplane ground-attack aircraft, and its main attack aircraft through most of the 1930s. It was based on the A-8, but had a radial engine instead of the A-8's inline, water-cooled engine, as well as other changes. Design and development The Model 60 was developed from advancements of the A-8 and the experimental YA-10. However, it became obsolete after a short use period, mainly because of fast-improving aviation technology, as well as the USAAC's desire for multi-engined attack aircraft. The most obvious difference between the A-12 and the A-8 is the air-cooled, radial engine in the A-12, which replaced the A-8's inline, water-cooled engine. This was a response to the USAAC's move toward a preference for radial engines, especially in attack aircraft. The rationale behind this preference is that the radial engine has a lower profile, making it less vulnerable to ground fire, and a simpler cooling mechan ...
