A. Damien Martin
A. Damien Martin (December 2, 1933 – August 15, 1991) was one of the founders of the Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI), originally known as the Institute for the Protection of Lesbian and Gay Youth (IPLGY). The Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI) founded the Harvey Milk High School in New York City. Martin was a psychiatrist and taught speech pathology at the NYU School of Education. Martin was a member of the Governor's Task Force on Teenage Suicide, Child Welfare League of America, The New York City Task Force on AIDS, and the NYC Board of Education Multicultural Advisory Committee. Hetrick-Martin Institute
The Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI) is a New York City-based non-profit organization devoted to serving the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning (LGBTQ) youth between the ages of 13 and 24, and their families. It was founded in 1979 by Dr. Emery Hetrick and Dr. Damien Martin as the Institute for the Protection of Lesbian and Gay Youth as a response to the needs of vulnerable and at risk LGBT youth in New York City. Following a private donation in 1983, matched by a grant from the New York State Division for Youth they were able to open an office at East 23rd Street, provide a drop-in centre and significantly expand their provision of LGBT youth counseling. Green-Wood Cemetery
Green-Wood Cemetery is a cemetery in the western portion of Brooklyn, New York City. The cemetery is located between South Slope/ Greenwood Heights, Park Slope, Windsor Terrace, Borough Park, Kensington, and Sunset Park, and lies several blocks southwest of Prospect Park. Its boundaries include, among other streets, 20th Street to the northeast, Fifth Avenue to the northwest, 36th and 37th Streets to the southwest, Fort Hamilton Parkway to the south, and McDonald Avenue to the east. Green-Wood Cemetery was founded in 1838 as a rural cemetery, in a time of rapid urbanization when churchyards in New York City were becoming overcrowded. LGBT History Month is an annual month-long observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, and the history of the List of LGBT rights by region, gay rights and related civil rights movements. It was founded in 1994 by Missouri high-school history teacher Rodney Wilson. LGBT History Month provides role models, builds community, and represents a civil rights statement about the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. As of 2022, LGBT History Month is a month-long celebration that is specific to Australia, Canada, Cuba, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, United Kingdom and the US. Harvey Milk High School
Harvey Milk High School (HMHS) is a public high school in the East Village of Lower Manhattan in New York City designed for, though not limited to, gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender young people, as well as those questioning their sexuality and gender identity. It is named after San Francisco, California supervisor Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man to be elected to a public office in the United States.
