A-Catamaran
The A-Class Catamaran, often abbreviated to A-Cat, is a development class sailing catamaran for singlehanded racing. Background The class was founded during the late 1950s and was part of the 4-tier IYRU (now World Sailing) approach to divide up the sports catamaran sailing scene into 4 separate groups. These A, B, C and D classes were governed by a very small set of class rules to which each design had to comply. In the beginning it was just: * Maximum hull length * Maximum overall width * Maximum sailarea All boats designed and built to these specs would be grouped into one fleet and race each other for crossing the finish line first. Pete Melvin
Pete Melvin (born January 11, 1962) is an American sailor. He competed in the Tornado event at the 1988 Summer Olympics. Melvin is also a noted yacht designer with his partner Gino Morrelli as Morrelli and Melvin. Biography Melvin was born in Jackson, Mississippi in 1962. He spent his early years living in Florida. He gained a degree in aerospace engineering from Boston University after graduating in 1985. For five years, Melvin worked in aircraft design at McDonnell Douglas. Melvin competed in trials for the 1976 Summer Olympics, 1980 Summer Olympics, and the 1984 Summer Olympics. At the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Melvin competed in the Tornado event, finishing in 14th place. Between 1997 and 2005, Melvin won three World Championships, and he has also won 25 national titles. In 1994, along with Gino Morrelli, Melvin designed the Hobie Wave catamaran. Darren Bundock (born 21 March 1971) is an Australian sailor from Gosford, New South Wales. He won a silver medal in the Tornado class at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney. Bundock and current crewmate Glenn Ashby are the 2007 world champions in the Tornado class and ranked number one in the event going into the 2008 Summer Olympics. Peter Burling (born 1 January 1991) is a New Zealand sailor. He was the 2021 America's Cup winning skipper and helmsman, and the 2017 America's Cup winning helmsman of Team New Zealand, and won an Olympic gold medal in the 49er class at the 2016 games and silver medals in the 2012 and 2020 Olympics. Burling is a founder of Live Ocean - a registered New Zealand charity which supports and invests in promising marine science, innovation, technology and marine conservation projects.
