99 Cents (Chicks On Speed Album)
''99 Cents'' (stylized as 99¢) is an album by German electroclash trio Chicks on Speed. It was released in 2003 through Chicks On Speed Records and is the group's second album after "Chicks On Speed Will Save Us All". Album information A different approach to their apparent aim to expose the superficiality of pop culture, this album is heavily electronic and, with the exception of Tom Tom Club's "Wordy Rappinghood", features completely original material. The same track features a bevy of guests including Miss Kittin (who appears later on "Shick Shaving"), Anki Lepper (also known as "Acid Maria"), singers Jill Mingo, Kevin Blechdom, Soffy O and Inga Humpe, ADULT. member Nicola Kuperus, Tina Weymouth (who composed the lyrics and sang on the original) and all three members of Le Tigre. As per usual, the album was rife with collaborators, though the Chicks (Melissa Logan, Alex Murray-Leslie and Kiki Moorse) were responsible for all of the album's lyrics and in part for the music. Chicks On Speed
Chicks on Speed is a feminist music and fine art ensemble, formed in Munich in 1997, after members Australian Alex Murray-Leslie and American Melissa Logan met at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. Though Chicks on Speed reached cult status throughout the 2000s as catalysts of the musical genre electroclash, the band was founded and more broadly, performed as a multidisciplinary art group working in performance art, electronic dance music, collage graphics, textile design and fashion. Merrill Nisker (born 11 November 1966), better known by her stage name Peaches, is a Canadian electroclash musician and producer. Born in Ontario, Peaches began her musical career in the 1990s as part of a folk trio, Mermaid Cafe. In 1995, she established a rock band, the Shit. That year she also released her first solo album, ''Fancypants Hoodlum''. After moving to Berlin, Germany, she was signed to the Kitty-Yo label and released her second album, '' The Teaches of Peaches'' (2000). Le Tigre (, ; French for "The Tiger") is an American electronic rock band formed by Kathleen Hanna (of Bikini Kill), Johanna Fateman and Sadie Benning in 1998 in New York City. Martina Michèle Weymouth (born November 22, 1950) is an American musician, singer, songwriter, and a founding member and bassist of the new wave group Talking Heads and its side project Tom Tom Club, which she co-founded with her husband, Talking Heads drummer Chris Frantz. Kevin Blechdom (born Kristin Grace Erickson; 1978 in Florida) is an American experimental electronic musician and performance artist. She is based in Santa Cruz, California. Early life and education Kristin Grace Erickson was born in 1978 in Florida and raised in Stuart, Florida. She studied piano and classical music at Florida State University however she was unhappy with the nature of her studies and transferred to Mills College in 1997 to study experimental music. She has a BA degree and MFA degree in electronic music from Mills College. "Wordy Rappinghood" is the debut single by American new wave band Tom Tom Club, from their 1981 self-titled debut album. It uses part of a traditional Moroccan children's song and game, "A Ram Sam Sam", made popular by the 1971 Rolf Harris recording. In the United States, the song topped the ''Billboard'' Disco Top 80 chart along with "Genius of Love". Structure, instrumentation and production The song opens with the sound of a typewriter and features jarring synthesizer chords and a distinctive drum break.
