845 Naval Air Squadron
845 Naval Air Squadron is a squadron of the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm. Part of the Commando Helicopter Force, it is a specialist amphibious unit operating the AgustaWestland Commando Merlin HC4 helicopter and provides troop transport and load lifting support to 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines. In 2012, the squadron celebrated 50 years since it was awarded "commando" status. The squadron is based at RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset. Role The primary role of the squadron is to support the Royal Marines in amphibious assaults and wartime environments. Roulement
Roulement is a term used by the British Army to signify major combat units (usually battalion strength) that are deployed on short tours of duty, normally for six months. It is also used in the wider British Military to mean the deployment of a strength of personnel on continuing operations. Translated from the French Language, roulement means rolling. The British Army has historically deployed infantry battalions for 6-month and 24-month roulement tours of Northern Ireland. Other Corps such as the Royal Armoured Corps (R.A.C.), when being used as infantry are deployed only on 4-month tours. During Operation Banner, this was more to do with the cost of re-training back to role than any operational reason. It operated the Westland Sea King HC.4 helicopter and previously provided advanced flying training to pilots for the other squadrons in the Commando Helicopter Force. Westland Wessex
The Westland Wessex is a British-built turbine-powered development of the Sikorsky H-34 (in US service known as Choctaw). It was developed and produced under licence by Westland Aircraft (later Westland Helicopters). One of the main changes from Sikorsky's H-34 was the replacement of the piston-engine powerplant with a turboshaft engine. Early models were powered by a single Napier Gazelle engine, while later builds used a pair of de Havilland Gnome engines. SS ''Melika'' was a Liberian-registered cargo vessel, which was involved in a collision with the French-registered ''Fernand Gilabert'' off the coast of Oman on 13 September 1958, causing a major maritime disaster. Fire broke out on both ships and there were 21 fatalities.
