6th Louisiana Field Battery
The 6th Louisiana Field Battery was an artillery unit recruited from volunteers in Louisiana that fought in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. The Grosse Tete Artillery organized in December 1863 using men detached from the 1st Louisiana Regular Battery and exchanged prisoners from the Pointe Coupee Artillery. In April and May 1864, the battery served during the Red River campaign and fought at Mansfield, Pleasant Hill, Blair's Landing, and Monett's Ferry. In May 1864, the unit helped capture the Union river transport ''City Belle'' at Wilson's Landing, helped destroy the USS ''Covington'' and USS ''Signal'', and fought at Mansura and Yellow Bayou. The battery surrendered on 1 June 1865 while at Alexandria, Louisiana. Alexandria is the ninth-largest city in the state of Louisiana and is the parish seat of Rapides Parish, Louisiana, United States. USS ''Signal'' – a small 190-ton steamship – was acquired during the second year of the American Civil War by the Union Navy and outfitted as a gunboat. She also served other types of duty, such as that of dispatch vessel and convoy escort. Service history The first ship to be named ''Signal'' by the Navy—a wooden-hulled, stern-wheel steamer built in 1862 at Wheeling, Virginia (now West Virginia)—was purchased by the U.S. Navy on 22 September 1862 at Saint Louis, Missouri. USS Covington (1863)
USS ''Covington'' was an ironclad gunboat purchased by the Union Navy during the American Civil War. She was assigned as a simple gunboat with powerful rifled guns to intercept blockade runners attempting to run the Union blockade of the Confederate States of America. ''Covington'' did not carry mortars or howitzers, which placed her at a disadvantage when attacked riverside in 1864 by Confederate troops. Losing the battle, she was set on fire. Most of the crew escaped. Pointe Coupee Artillery
The Pointe Coupee Artillery was a Confederate Louisiana artillery unit in the American Civil War made up primarily of men from the parishes of Pointe Coupee, East Baton Rouge, Livingston and other surrounding parishes as well as a large number of men from New Orleans. Stewart of Pointe Coupee Parish began recruiting men in the spring of 1861 eventually forming what would soon become Co A of the Pointe Coupee Artillery.
