6th Frigate Squadron
The 6th Frigate Squadron was an administrative unit of the Royal Navy from 1950 to 2002. History During its existence, the squadron included , Type 15, , , , and Type 23 frigates. Ships from the squadron participated in the Coronation Fleet Review, the Beira Patrol, the Cod Wars, the Silver Jubilee Fleet Review, the Falklands War and STANAVFORLANT. Ships assigned to the squadron bore a badge on their funnels or superstructure depicting the Red Hand of Ulster. The squadron was active in Singapore from December 1960 to September 1961; September 1962 to January 1963, before being redesignated to the 25th Escort Squadron. Squadron (naval)
A squadron, or naval squadron, is a significant group of warships which is nonetheless considered too small to be designated a fleet. A squadron is typically a part of a fleet. Between different navies there are no clear defining parameters to distinguish a squadron from a fleet (or from a flotilla), and the size and strength of a naval squadron varies greatly according to the country and time period. Groups of small warships, or small groups of major warships, might instead be designated flotillas by some navies according to their terminology. Since the size of a naval squadron varies greatly, the rank associated with command of a squadron also varies greatly. Rear Admiral Roger Charles Dimmock, (27 May 1935 – 6 May 2014) was a Royal Navy officer who served as Naval Secretary from 1985 to 1987. Rear Admiral Niall Stuart Roderick Kilgour, (born 4 March 1950) is a former Royal Navy officer who served as Commander Operations and Rear Admiral, Submarines. Vice Admiral John Henry Stuart McAnally, (born 9 April 1945) is a former Royal Navy officer who served as Commandant of the Royal College of Defence Studies from 1998 to 2001. Admiral of the Fleet Sir Edward Beckwith Ashmore, (11 December 1919 – 28 April 2016) was a senior Royal Navy officer. He saw active service in the Second World War and later commanded two frigates before achieving high command in the Navy.
