Alexander Backus
Rear Admiral Alexander Kirkwood Backus, (born 1 April 1948) is a former Royal Navy officer who served as Flag Officer Sea Training from 1999 to 2001. Naval career Educated at Sevenoaks School and Britannia Royal Naval College, Backus joined the Royal Navy in 1966.''Who's Who 2010'', A & C Black, 2010, He became commanding officer of the frigate in 1984, Commander Sea Training in 1988 and commanding officer of the frigate and commander of the 6th Frigate Squadron in December 1990. He went on to be Commander, British Forces in the Falkland Islands in 1995, Assistant Chief of Staff (Policy) to the Commander-in-Chief Fleet in 1996 and Flag Officer Sea Training in September 1999. The Royal Navy (RN) is the United Kingdom's naval warfare force. Flag Officer, Surface Flotilla
The Flag Officer, Surface Flotilla was a senior British Royal Navy appointment from 1990 to 2002. When the post of Commander-in-Chief Fleet was created in 1971, three major subordinate appointments were also created: First Flotilla, Second Flotilla and Flag Officer, Carriers and Amphibious Ships, each held by a rear-admiral. In 1990 the First Flotilla was re-designated Surface Flotilla. In April 1992, the system was changed when the Third Flotilla was abolished and the remaining two flotilla commanders became: Flag Officer, Surface Flotilla – responsible for operational readiness and training – and Flag Officer, UK Task Group – who would command any deployed task group. Companions Of The Order Of The Bath
The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order". He did not (as is commonly believed) revive the Order of the Bath, since it had never previously existed as an Order, in the sense of a body of knights who were governed by a set of statutes and whose numbers were replenished when vacancies occurred. Rear Admiral James Campsie Rapp CB (born May 1952) is a former Royal Navy officer who served as Flag Officer Sea Training. Naval career Educated at Ampleforth College and Britannia Royal Naval College, Rapp was Navigating Officer of HMS Bronington when Lieutenant The Prince of Wales was in command in 1976. He commanded the frigate HMS Brazen from 1989, deploying to the Gulf for the first Gulf War and later became commanding officer of the frigate HMS ''Brilliant'' in July 1993. His time in command included the production of a BBC documentary about the ship directed by Chris Terrill. He later became commanding officer of the frigate HMS ''Cornwall'', then commander of the 2nd Frigate Squadron in May 1998 and Flag Officer Sea Training in November 2001, serving until April 2004. Rear Admiral Richard John Lippiett, (born 7 July 1949) is a retired senior Royal Navy officer who became Commandant of the Joint Services Command and Staff College. Early life and education Lippiett was born on 7 July 1949. He was educated at Brighton, Hove and Sussex Grammar School. Naval career Lippiett joined the Royal Navy in 1967. He served in the Falklands War as executive officer of HMS ''Ambuscade''. Commander-in-Chief Fleet
The Commander-in-Chief Fleet (CINCFLEET) was the admiral responsible for the operations of the ships, submarines and aircraft of the British Royal Navy from 1971 until April 2012. The post was subordinate to the First Sea Lord, the professional head of the Naval Service. In its last years, as the Navy shrank, more administrative responsibilities were added. In April 2012, the post was abolished, its rank downgraded from admiral to three-star vice admiral, and re-designated Fleet Commander and Deputy Chief of Naval Staff. History Prior to 1964 responsibility for control and direction of British naval affairs lay with the Admiralty, naval command lay with the Admiralty Naval Staff. Following the merger of the Admiralty in 1964 into the new Ministry of Defence it became known as the Navy Department.
