64th New York State Legislature
The 64th New York State Legislature, consisting of the New York State Senate and the New York State Assembly, met from January 5 to May 25, 1841, during the third year of William H. Seward's governorship, in Albany. Background Under the provisions of the New York Constitution of 1821, 32 Senators were elected on general tickets in eight senatorial districts for four-year terms. They were divided into four classes, and every year eight Senate seats came up for election. Assemblymen were elected countywide on general tickets to a one-year term, the whole Assembly being renewed annually. At this time there were two political parties: the Democratic Party and the Whig Party. On September 2, the Democratic state convention met at Syracuse, and nominated William C. Luther Bradish
Luther Bradish (September 15, 1783 in Cummington, Massachusetts – August 30, 1863 in Newport, Rhode Island) was an American lawyer and politician who served two terms as Lieutenant Governor of New York from 1839 to 1842, while his Whig Party colleague, William H. Seward was governor. He was also co-founder of Children's Village. Life Luther Bradish was born in 1783 in Cummington, Massachusetts, the son of Col. John Bradish, a Revolutionary War veteran, and Hannah Bradish (née Warner). He graduated from Williams College in 1804. He read the law and passed the bar, becoming an attorney and entering practice. Bradish served in the U.S. Army during the War of 1812. In 1814, he married Helen Elizabeth Gibbs (daughter of George Gibbs). She died in 1816 along with their son. Levi (; ) was, according to the Book of Genesis, the third of the six sons of Jacob and Leah (Jacob's third son), and the founder of the Israelite Tribe of Levi (the Levites, including the Kohanim) and the great-grandfather of Aaron, Moses and Miriam. The speaker of the New York State Assembly is the highest official in the New York State Assembly, customarily elected from the ranks of the majority party. As in most countries with a British heritage, the speaker presides over the lower house of the legislature. Elijah Rhoades
Elijah Rhoades (March 7, 1791 Chesterfield, Hampshire County, Massachusetts – February 9, 1858 Pittsfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts) was an American politician from New York. Life He was the son of Joseph Rhoades and Salome (Rust) Rhoades. He graduated from Williams College in 1813. On March 4, 1818, he married Louisa Gardiner, a sister of Chief Judge Addison Gardiner (1797–1883). They had no children, but adopted a daughter. He was Clerk of Onondaga County from 1838 to 1840. He was a member of the New York State Senate (7th D.) from 1841 to 1844, sitting in the 64th, 65th, 66th and 67th New York State Legislatures. James Faulkner (Livingston County, NY)
James Faulkner (January 21, 1790 in Cambridge, Washington County, New York – October 19, 1884 in Dansville, Livingston County, New York) was an American physician, manufacturer, banker and politician from New York. Life He was the son of Samuel Faulkner (1765–1805) and Catherine (Phoenix) Faulkner (b. 1768). In 1796, his family removed to Dansville, then a settlement in the Town of Sparta, in Ontario County, now a village in the Town of North Dansville in Livingston County. In 1801, he and his father remove to Geneseo where his father died in 1805. In 1807, Faulkner went to Painted Post to study medicine. In 1811, he was licensed to practice, and commenced the practice of medicine in Bath. On May 12, 1812, he married Minerva Hammond (1795–1855), and returned to Dansville.
