5th Legislative Assembly Of Quebec
The 5th Legislative Assembly of Quebec was the provincial legislature in Quebec, Canada that existed from December 2, 1881, to October 14, 1886. The Quebec Conservative Party led Joseph-Adolphe Chapleau, Joseph-Alfred Mousseau and John Jones Ross was the governing party. Chapleau was succeeded by Mousseau in 1882 while Ross succeeded Mousseau in 1884. It was the Conservatives last majority government. The sixty-five members were each elected in a single-member district through First past the post. Célestin Bergevin
Célestin Bergevin (September 7, 1832 – July 17, 1910) was a farmer and political figure in Quebec. He represented Beauharnois in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1867 to 1871 and from 1878 to 1886 as a Conservative member. He was born in Saint-Timothée, Lower Canada, the son of Pierre Bergevin and Angélique Mercier. Bergevin was mayor of Saint-Clément-de-Beauharnois from 1878 to 1882. He was also a justice of the peace and harbour master for Valleyfield. In 1857, he married Marie Salomae May. Bergevin was defeated by George-Étienne Cartier when he ran for reelection in 1871, also losing by-elections in 1873 and 1875. He was successful in 1878 and 1881 but defeated again in 1886. Bergevin died in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield at the age of 77. Champlain (provincial Electoral District)
Champlain is a provincial electoral riding in the Mauricie region of Quebec, Canada, which elects members to the National Assembly of Quebec. It notably includes the eastern portions of the city of Trois-Rivières as well as Saint-Tite, Saint-Maurice and Sainte-Thècle. Its boundaries have remained the same since the 1973 election. However, the boundaries changed for the 2018 election as it gained Hérouxville, Lac-aux-Sables, Notre-Dame-de-Montauban, Saint-Adelphe, Sainte-Thècle, Saint-Séverin and Saint-Tite from Laviolette. It is named after the founder of Quebec City in 1608, Samuel de Champlain. Robert Trudel (February 21, 1820 – July 29, 1886) was a politician in Quebec, Canada. Background He was born on February 21, 1820, in Sainte-Geneviève-de-Batiscan, Mauricie. Mayor Trudel was Mayor of Sainte-Geneviève-de-Batiscan from 1868 to 1873. Chambly is a provincial electoral district in the Montérégie region of Quebec, Canada. It includes the city of Chambly and other smaller municipalities. It was created for the 1867 election (and an electoral district of that name existed earlier in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada and the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada). In the change from the 2001 to the 2011 electoral map, it lost Saint-Bruno-de-Montarville to the newly created Montarville electoral district. Michel-Dosithée-Stanislas Martel
Michel-Dosithée-Stanislas Martel (January 11, 1838 – September 18, 1908) was a physician and political figure in Quebec. He represented Chambly in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1878 to 1879 and from 1881 to 1886 as a Conservative. He was born in Verchères, Lower Canada, the son of Jean Martel and Charlotte Lamontagne, and was educated at the Collège de Montréal and the College of Medicine and Surgery at Montreal. He qualified as a physician in 1865 and set up practice at Chambly. Martel was also a justice of the peace, a captain in the militia and president of the local Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society. In 1868, he married Marie-Rose de Lima Sénécal. He served as a member of the municipal council for Chambly and was mayor from 1878 to 1879 and from 1890 to 1893, also serving as warden for Chambly County. William Warren Lynch
William Warren Lynch (September 30, 1845 – November 23, 1916) was a Canadian lawyer, politician, and judge in the province of Quebec. Biography Born near the Village of Bedford, County of Missisquoi, Canada East, the son of Thomas Lynch of County Cavan and Charlotte R. Williams, Lynch attended Stanbridge Academy and entered the University of Vermont in 1861 but did not continue his studies there due to the American Civil War. In 1862, he received a scholarship from McGill University and entered the Arts course but due to his poor health he was unable to complete his studies. In 1865, he started studying law in the law office of S. W. Foster in Knowlton and later John Monk in Montreal. He received a Bachelor of Laws degree from McGill in 1868 and was called to the Quebec Bar the same year. In 1869, he started practicing law in Knowlton and later in Sweetsburg. Bonaventure is a provincial electoral district in the Gaspésie–Îles-de-la-Madeleine region of Quebec, Canada that elects members to the National Assembly of Quebec. Louis-Joseph Riopel
Louis-Joseph Riopel (September 16, 1841 – May 11, 1915) was a lawyer, notary and political figure in Quebec. He represented Bonaventure in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1881 to 1882 and Bonaventure in the House of Commons of Canada from 1882 to 1891 as a Conservative member. He was born in St-Jacques-L'Achigan, Canada East, the son of Louis Riopel and Julie Mercure. Riopel was educated at the Collège de l'Assomption, then articled as a notary with Louis Archambeault, was qualified to practice in 1865 and set up practice in New Carlisle. In 1875, he married Marie Louise Justine Robitaille, the daughter of a notary. Riopel served as Superintendent of Colonization and Public Works for Bonaventure County from 1869 to 1873 and then crown lands agent from 1873 to 1880. Joseph Robillard
Joseph Robillard (January 14, 1838 – October 13, 1905) was a farmer, navigator, merchant and political figure in Quebec. He represented Berthier (provincial electoral district), Berthier in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1878 to 1886 as a Conservative Party of Quebec (historical), Conservative. He was born in Saint-Joseph-de-Lanoraie, Quebec, Saint-Joseph-de-Lanoraie, Lower Canada, the son of Maurice Robillard and Marguerite Hilaire, dit Bonaventure, and was educated there. Robillard became a navigator, then a farmer and merchant dealing in grain and hay at Saint-Joseph-de-Lanoraie then Montreal. He was a member of the Montreal Board of Trade. In 1873, Robillard married Annie de Lorimier. He was first elected to the Quebec assembly in 1878; his election in 1880 was appealed but he won the subsequent by-election.
