Argyle (electoral District)
Argyle is a provincial electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada which existed between 1981 and 2013 and since 2021. It elects one member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. It was created in 1981 when the district of Yarmouth was split into two separate districts. The district comprises most of the Municipality of the District of Argyle, an Acadian area occupying the eastern half of Yarmouth County. The electoral district was abolished following the 2012 electoral boundary review and was largely replaced by the new electoral district of Argyle-Barrington. John Newell (Canadian Politician)
John Ainslie Newell (born October 6, 1935) is a Canadian former politician. He represented the electoral district of Cape Breton The Lakes in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1983 to 1988. He was a Progressive Conservative. Born in 1935 at Sydney, Nova Scotia, Newell served on Cape Breton County Council from 1976 to 1982. He first attempted to enter provincial politics in the 1981 election, but was defeated by Liberal Ossie Fraser by 120 votes. Fraser died in October 1982, and Newell was elected the new MLA for the riding in a byelection on February 22, 1983. Cape Breton South (provincial Electoral District)
Cape Breton South is a former provincial electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada which existed from 1933 to 2013. It elected one member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. In its last configuration, the district included Sydney and its western suburbs until the North West Arm and south along the Sydney River until Blacketts Lake. In 1933, the County of Cape Breton was divided into five electoral districts, one of which was named Cape Breton South. In 2003, it lost part of the Ashby area to Cape Breton Nova and gained Balls Creek and the Coxheath area. Following the 2012 electoral boundary review, the district was dissolved into Northside-Westmount, Sydney-Whitney Pier and Sydney River-Mira-Louisbourg. Vincent James MacLean (born December 8, 1944)Normandin, PG ''Canadian Parliamentary Guide, 1977'' was leader of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party in 1985 and again from 1986 to 1992. He was replaced by John Savage. He was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia on Cape Breton Island, the son of Joseph W. MacLean and Marguerite MacNeil. MacLean grew up and lives in Sydney. He was educated at Sydney Academy, St. Francis Xavier University, the University of New Brunswick and Saint Mary's University. He served in the Canadian Officers' Training Corps at CFB Shilo in Manitoba from 1964 to 1966. In 1968, he married Natalie Furdas. He was a high school teacher at Sydney Academy before being elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in 1974. He represented the riding of Cape Breton South from 1974 until 1993. Cape Breton Nova is a former provincial electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada which existed between 1956 and 2013. It elected one member to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. In its last configuration, the district included the northern parts of Sydney including Whitney Pier, as well as a small area of Cape Breton County, all within the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. The district was created in 1956. In 1993, it gained the Ashby area between Welton Street and Ashby Road from Cape Breton South and the Grand Lake Road area from Cape Breton West. It lost the Scotchtown and River Ryan/Lingan areas to Cape Breton Centre. In 2003, it lost the New Victoria area and gained part of northern Sydney. Northside-Westmount is a provincial electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada, that elects one member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. In 1933, the County of Cape Breton was divided into five electoral districts, one of which was Cape Breton North, which was carved out of parts of Cape Breton Centre and Cape Breton East. In 2003, the district gained upper North Sydney as far as Balls Creek and Point Aconi. Brian Alexander Young (born September 29, 1949''Canadian Parliamentary Guide, 1984'', PG Normandin) is a former politician in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Cape Breton North in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1981 to 1993 as a Progressive Conservative member. He was born in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, the son of James R. Young and Julia Therese Young, and educated at St. Francis Xavier University and Dalhousie University. He married Nancy Ann Wilkie in 1975. Young is president of Young's Topex Limited, which produces speciality steel products. Young established a foundation to promote organ donation which is named after his daughter Carmen, who died in 1992 after undergoing a double lung transplant. Young served on the town council for North Sydney from 1980 to 1981. He entered provincial politics in the 1981 election, defeating New Democrat incumbent Len J. Donald Gardner "Donnie" MacLeod (September 10, 1938 – June 22, 2015) was a Canadian politician. He represented the electoral district of Cape Breton East in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1980 to 1988. He was a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Nova Scotia. Born in 1938 at Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, MacLeod was first elected in a byelection on December 2, 1980. MacLeod was re-elected in the 1981, and 1984 elections.
