52 Super Series
The 52 Super Series is a high-performance, monohull yacht racing circuit. The "Box Rule" associated to the TP 52 Class, means that boats must, literally, be able to fit within a box of certain dimensions. This means that there are no time allowances or handicaps and the boats race in real-time – first past the post wins. The Box Rule is strict enough to eliminate the need to set handicaps, yet flexible enough to encourage small, yearly innovations. The 52 Super Series is won by teams of skilful sailors, and the setup of the class means that the ages of the boat is of less importance. The circuit grew from the ashes of the Audi MedCup which finished in 2011 when the principal sponsor withdrew. TP 52
The Transpac 52 (TP52) is a class of yacht used for competitive 52 Super Series yacht racing, and the Audi MedCup previously, besides the world championship of the class. The class is recognised by the International Sailing Federation which entitles the class to hold an Official World Championships. History The TP52 Class has grown from a non registered club of like minded yachtsmen inspired by Tom Pollack to a fully member controlled, registered and ISAF recognised Class with a proper set of Bylaws, an Annual Meeting, an Executive Committee made up out of the Members and a Class President who also has to be a Member. The original intention was to provide a yacht capable for both inshore and offshore sailing specifically the Transpacific Yacht Race however with the decline in IMS racing, the class became popular in Europe. Sailing (sport)
The sport of sailing involves a variety of competitive sailing formats that are sanctioned through various sailing federations and yacht clubs. Racing disciplines include matches within a fleet of sailing craft, between a pair thereof or among teams. Additionally, there are specialized competitions that include setting speed records. Racing formats include both closed courses and point-to-point contests; they may be in sheltered waters, coast-wise or on the open ocean. Most competitions are held within defined classes or ratings that either entail one type of sailing craft to ensure a contest primarily of skill or rating the sailing craft to create classifications or handicaps. Audi MedCup
The Audi MedCup was a sailing competition which began in 2005 and turned into the world’s leading regatta circuit. The event was last held in 2011. It was sailed in the TP 52 and Soto 40 classes (previously the GP42 class in 2009–2010). The circuit, which was sponsored by the German car manufacturer Audi, ran annually throughout Southern Europe and attracted some of the best sailors in the world. The five-regatta circuit lasted five months starting in May and culminated in September. The circuit was based on a box rule where every boat, in theory, had a similar design. This left it to the skill of the sailors to decide the winner, much like Formula One. There is some leverage in the rule in that deck layouts can be adjusted and sails can be crafted differently but the main design features such as weight, beam, and mast height and sail area are restricted to this "box rule" standard. Quantum Racing
In physics, a quantum (plural quanta) is the minimum amount of any physical entity (physical property) involved in an interaction. The fundamental notion that a physical property can be "quantized" is referred to as "the hypothesis of quantization". This means that the magnitude of the physical property can take on only discrete values consisting of integer multiples of one quantum. For example, a photon is a single quantum of light (or of any other form of electromagnetic radiation). Azzurra
Azzurra is a yacht racing team that competed in the America's Cup, the Audi MedCup and the 52 Super Series for the Italian Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. History Funded by business magnate Aga Khan IV and industrialist Gianni Agnelli, and managed by businessman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, Azzurra began to compete in 1982. They competed in the 1983 Louis Vuitton Cup in Newport with ''Azzurra'' (I–4), but were not able to advance to the 1983 America's Cup. Aircraft manufacturer Ambrosini was involved in the construction of the yachts. Rán Racing
In Norse mythology, Rán (Old Norse: ) is a goddess and a personification of the sea. Rán and her husband Ægir, a jötunn who also personifies the sea, have nine daughters, who personify waves. Doug DeVos
Doug DeVos (born October 6, 1964) is an American businessman and sailor. He is co-chairman (with Steve Van Andel) of Amway, which was co-founded by their fathers. DeVos is the chairman of the executive committee of the National Constitutional Center. Early life DeVos is the youngest son of Helen June (Van Wesep) and Amway co-founder Rich DeVos, who, with Steve Van Andel's father Jay Van Andel, started Amway in Ada, Michigan, in 1959. DeVos earned a degree from Purdue University, and played quarterback there. DeVos started at Amway early in his working career, and took on various responsibilities and roles before being named president in 2002. Yachting is the use of recreational boats and ships called ''yachts'' for Yacht racing, racing or Cruising (maritime), cruising. Yachts are distinguished from working ships mainly by their leisure purpose. "Yacht" derives from the Dutch language, Dutch word ''wiktionary:jacht, jacht'' ("hunt").
