504 Records is a record label founded by Mike Dine in 1979 that specializes in New Orleans jazz. The name comes from an area code in New Orleans. History Mike Dine was a British draughtsman and jazz fan living in England when he met Tom Stagg, now a British expatriate, jazz fan, and founder of NOLA Records. During the 1960s, Stagg had helped bring to Europe musicians such as John Handy, Andrew Morgan, Louis Nelson, Alton Purnell, Emanuel Sayles, and Kid Thomas. When Dine started 504 Records in 1979, he hired Stagg as a producer, and Stagg shut down NOLA Records. Between 2005 and 2018, 504 Records collaborated with La Croix Records (UK) to co-produce 9 504/La Croix CDs in the Lord Richard New Orleans Sessions series. George Lewis (clarinetist)
George Lewis (born Joseph Louis Francois Zenon; July 13, 1900 – December 31, 1968) was an American jazz clarinetist who achieved his highest profile in the later decades of his life. Ancestry Lewis was born in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. Through his mother, Alice Zeno, his maternal great-great-grandmother was a Senegalese slave who was brought to Louisiana around 1803. Zeno's family retained some knowledge of Senegalese language and customs until Alice's generation. Personal George married Emma Zeno in 1918 in New Orleans they had four children, Mildred Zeno-Major born 1919-1996; Joseph Zeno 1921-2003; William (Bill) Zeno 1923-1993; and George (Baby George) 1925-2005. Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. The music of New Orleans assumes various styles of music which have often borrowed from earlier traditions. New Orleans, Louisiana, is especially known for its strong association with jazz music, universally considered to be the birthplace of the genre. Chester Zardis
Chester Zardis (May 27, 1900, New Orleans, Louisiana, United States - August 14, 1990, New Orleans) was an American jazz double-bassist. Zardis played bass from a young age, and studied without his disapproving mother's knowledge, under Billy Marrero of the Superior Orchestra. In his teens he was involved in a fistfight at a New Orleans theater, which resulted in his being sent to the Jones Waif Home. While there he began playing with another of the Home's residents, Louis Armstrong. He joined Buddy Petit's orchestra at age 16, and worked as a bassist in nightclubs and a tubist in brass bands in New Orleans in the 1920s, playing with Kid Rena, A.J. Piron, Punch Miller, Kid Howard, Jack Carey, Fate Marable, and Duke Dejan's Dixie Rhythm Band. He was given the nickname "Little Bear" by Fats Pichon, a bandleader with whom Zardis played on the riverboat ''S.S. Capital'' in the 1930s. Young Tuxedo Brass Band
The Young Tuxedo Brass Band is a brass band from New Orleans that was active after World War II. The Young Tuxedo Brass Band was founded in 1938 by John Casimir. Its name is a nod to the Tuxedo Brass Band of Papa Celestin, an ensemble in New Orleans in the 1910s and 1920s. The ensemble generally held between nine and eleven players, with two trumpets, two trombones, two reeds, a sousaphone or tuba, a snare drum, and a bass drum. Their first record was issued in 1958 on Atlantic Records, and featured Paul Barbarin on drums; other personnel included Andy Anderson and John Brunious on trumpet, Clement Tervalon, Eddie Pierson, and Jim Robinson on trombone, reedists Herman Sherman and Andrew Morgan, Wilbert "Bird" Tillman, sousaphone, and drummer Emile Knox. Michael White (born November 29, 1954 in New Orleans) is a jazz clarinetist, bandleader, composer, jazz historian and musical educator. Jazz critic Scott Yanow said in a review that White "displays the feel and spirit of the best New Orleans clarinetists". Early life White was raised Catholic Church, Catholic in New Orleans (by a father who was a Knights of Peter Claver, Knight of Peter Claver), and attended a number of Black Catholicism, Black Catholic schools in the city, including Saint Francis de Sales, Holy Ghost, and St Joan of Arc. While at the latter school, he studied clarinet and played in his first parade. Kid Sheik
George Colar, actually Cola but he used Colar, better known as Kid Sheik or Kid Sheik Cola, was a New Orleans jazz trumpeter and band leader who was born in New Orleans September 15, 1908, and passed in Detroit November 7, 1996. He is most associated with Dixieland jazz and was a long-term performer with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. His nickname "Kid Sheik" came from his chic style of clothing as he wore sheik suites as a young man. Cola started playing the trumpet at age 16 where he took informal lessons from Wooden Joe Nicholas. As a young musician, Cola idolized Chris Kelley and he would follow him around. Fred Lonzo (born August 26, 1950), also known as Freddie Lonzo, is a jazz trombonist. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Lonzo is one of the most highly regarded practitioners of "tailgate" style traditional jazz trombone. His style is distinctly his own, but such influences as Kid Ory and Frog Joseph can be heard. Lonzo has played with such brass bands as Doc Paulin's, the Imperial, Olympia, and Young Tuxedo.
