5th Rhode Island Infantry Regiment
The 5th Rhode Island Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 5th Rhode Island Infantry Regiment was organized at Providence, Rhode Island. The regiment rendezvoused at Camp Greene in October, 1861, was transferred to Camp Slocum at Providence and mustered into U. S. Army service for three years as a battalion of five companies on December 16, 1861. The battalion left Providence for Annapolis, MD to join Burnside's expedition to North Carolina. At Annapolis it was assigned to the 3rd brigade under Gen. Parke, embarked for Roanoke Island, NC where it participated in the battle on Feb. 8, 1862, and was also in the Battle of New Berne on March 14. It was then posted at Newport City until the siege of and assault on Fort Macon, in which it was active, after which it went into camp at Bogue banks and later at Beaufort, SC. O Canada
"O Canada" (french: Ô Canada, italic=no) is the national anthem of Canada. The song was originally commissioned by Lieutenant Governor of Quebec Théodore Robitaille for the 1880 Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day ceremony; Calixa Lavallée composed the music, after which words were written by the poet and judge Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier. The original lyrics were in French; an English translation was published in 1906. Multiple English versions ensued, with Robert Stanley Weir's version in 1908 gaining the most popularity, eventually serving as the basis for the official lyrics enacted by Parliament. Calixa Lavallée
Calixa Lavallée (December 28, 1842 – January 21, 1891) was a French-Canadian-American musician and Union Army band musician during the American Civil War. He is best known for composing the music for "O Canada," which officially became the national anthem of Canada in 1980, after a vote in the Senate and the House of Commons. The same 1980 Act of Parliament also changed some of the English lyrics. A slight alteration to the English lyrics was made again in 2018. The original French lyrics and the music, however, have remained unchanged since 1880. Early life and education Lavallée was born Calixte Paquet dit Lavallée, the son of Jean Baptiste Paquet and Charlotte Valentine. He was born near Verchères, a village near present-day Montreal in the Province of Canada (now the Canadian province of Quebec). Providence is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Rhode Island. American Civil War

The 3rd Rhode Island Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 3rd Rhode Island Infantry Regiment was organized at Providence, Rhode Island, in August 1861. The regiment left Rhode Island for Fort Hamilton, New York Harbor, September 7, 1861, then moved to Washington, D.C., September 14–16, returning to Fort Hamilton September 22. Moved to Fort Monroe, Virginia, October 12–14. It was attached to Sherman's South Carolina Expeditionary Corps. Participated in the expedition to Port Royal, South Carolina, October 28-November 7.
