49th Cannes Film Festival
The 49th Cannes Film Festival was held from 9 to 20 May 1996. The Palme d'Or went to '' Secrets & Lies'' by Mike Leigh. The festival opened with ''Ridicule'', directed by Patrice Leconte and closed with '' Flirting with Disaster'', directed by David O. Russell. Sabine Azéma was the mistress of ceremonies. Sabine Azéma
Sabine Azéma (born 20 September 1949) is a French stage and film actress and director. Born in Paris, she graduated from the Paris Conservatory of Dramatic Arts. Career Her film career began in 1975. Nathalie Baye
Nathalie Marie Andrée Baye (born 6 July 1948) is a French film, television and stage actress. She began her career in 1970 and has appeared in more than 80 films. A ten-time César Award nominee, her four wins were for '' Every Man for Himself'' (1980), '' Strange Affair'' (1981), ''La Balance'' (1982), and ''The Young Lieutenant'' (2005). Antonio Tabucchi
Antonio Tabucchi (; 24 September 1943 – 25 March 2012) was an Italian writer and academic who taught Portuguese language and literature at the University of Siena, Italy. Deeply in love with Portugal, he was an expert, critic and translator of the works of Fernando Pessoa from whom he drew the conceptions of ''saudade'', of ''fiction'' and of the '' heteronyms''. Tabucchi was first introduced to Pessoa's works in the 1960s when attending the Sorbonne. He was so charmed that when he returned to Italy, he took an introductory course in Portuguese for a better comprehension of the poet. His books and essays have been translated in 18 countries. Together with his wife, Maria José de Lancastre, he translated many works by Pessoa into Italian and has written a book of essays and a comedy about the writer. Krzysztof Piesiewicz
Krzysztof Marek Piesiewicz (; born 25 October 1945 in Warsaw, Poland) is a Polish lawyer, screenwriter, and politician. From 1991 to 1993 and from 1997 to 2011 he was a member of Polish Senate. He was the head of the Ruch Społeczny (RS) or Social Movement Party. Life Piesiewicz studied law at Warsaw University and began practicing in 1973. Through the late 1970s he became increasingly involved in political cases, defending opponents of the Communist regime, serving as a legal advisor for Solidarity, and assisting in the successful prosecution of the murderers of Jerzy Popiełuszko. was a Japanese art director, costume designer, and graphic designer known for her work in stage, screen, advertising, and print media. Henry Chapier (14 November 1933 – 27 January 2019) was a French journalist, film critic, television presenter and feature film director. Biography Henry Chapier was born in Bucharest, Romania, the son of an international lawyer and an actress of Austrian descent. He left Romania along with his family in 1947. Chapier began in 1958 a career as film critic collaborating with the weekly newspaper ''Arts'' with François Truffaut. He later became a stringer at ''L'Express'' and obtained a prize as best beginner journalist in 1959. Michael Ballhaus, A.S.C. (5 August 1935 – 12 April 2017) was a German cinematographer who collaborated with directors such as Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Martin Scorsese, Mike Nichols and James L.
