Ivan Passer
Ivan Passer (10 July 1933 – 9 January 2020) was a Czech film director and screenwriter, best known for his involvement in the Czechoslovak New Wave and for directing American films such as '' Born to Win'' (1971), ''Cutter's Way'' (1981) and ''Stalin'' (1992). Life and career Passer was born in Prague, the son of Marianna (Mandelick) and Alois Passer. Passer attended King George boarding school in Poděbrady with future filmmakers Miloš Forman, Jerzy Skolimowski and Paul Fierlinger and playwright Václav Havel. He then studied at FAMU in Prague, but did not finish the program. He began his career as an assistant director on Ladislav Helge's ''Velká samota''. Later he collaborated with his friend Forman on all of Forman's Czech films, including ''Loves of a Blonde'' (1965) and ''The Firemen's Ball'' (1967), both of which Passer co-wrote and which were nominated for Academy Awards. ''Haunted Summer'' is a 1988 drama film directed by Ivan Passer. Plot summary In 1816, authors Lord Byron, Percy Shelley, and Mary Shelley (née Godwin) get together for some philosophical discussions, but the situation soon deteriorates into mind games, drugs, and sex. It is a fictionalization of the summer that Lord Byron and the Shelleys, together with Byron's doctor, John William Polidori, spent in the isolated Villa Diodati by Lake Geneva. It is there they devise a contest to produce the best horror story to kill the dullness of summer. João Botelho
João Manuel Relvas Leopoldo Botelho (born 1949) is a Portuguese film director. He has directed and written the screenplays of numerous films. His films have won several awards. His works have been nominated for the Venice Film Festival's Golden Lion. Botelho was awarded the prestigious Ordem do Infante D.Henrique (Grau Comendador), one of the highest Portuguese honors, by President Jorge Sampaio on 10 June 2005. Early years Botelho was born in Lamego, northern Portugal. He enrolled in mechanical engineering at the University of Coimbra and in cinema at the Lisbon Theatre and Film School (Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema), in 1974, dropping out in both cases. Paul Vecchiali (28 April 1930 – 18 January 2023) was a French filmmaker and author. Biography Vecchiali was born in Ajaccio, Corsica, France. He spent his childhood in Toulon. His family, suspected of collaboration, preferred to leave this city after the war. His cinema took as a starting point the French cinema of the 1930s, with an experimental and autobiographical tone. ''Once More'' (also known as ''Encore'') is a 1988 French drama film written and directed by Paul Vecchiali. Plot The film follows the life of Louis, who holds a trustworthy but subordinate job in a major company. He lives with his wife Sybèle and their daughter Anne-Marie, with whom he has a special relationship. He starts to grow sick of his seemingly mundane life, however, and starts to look for happiness elsewhere; this is where he starts discovering his attractions to men. ''Eldorado'' ( hu, Eldorádó, also known as ''The Midas Touch'') is a 1988 Hungarian drama film written and directed by Géza Bereményi. The film was entered into the main competition at the 45th edition of the Venice Film Festival. For this film Bereményi won the European Film Award for Best Director at the 2nd European Film Awards. Plot The story takes place in the urban districts of Pest focusing on the marketplace on Teleki square (which was still existing mostly unchanged when the movie was made) from after the end of World War II in 1945 until the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. The main character is the head of the black market in Budapest. He thinks he can buy everyone and everything but at the end he must face that he can't buy life.
