41st Battalion Iowa Volunteer Infantry
The 41st Iowa Infantry Battalion was an infantry battalion that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 41st Iowa Infantry was organized as Companies A, B, and C of the 14th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment at Davenport, Iowa and mustered in for three years of Federal service on November 6, 1861. These three companies were immediately detached and sent to Fort Randall, Dakota Territory, arriving there on December 5, 1861. The companies were permanently detached from the 14th Iowa on September 18, 1862, where they remained until May 1863. At one time, the state of Iowa intended to use these companies as the nucleus of a 41st Iowa Regiment, but this plan was abandoned. The battalion was transferred to the 7th Iowa Volunteer Cavalry Regiment in April 1863. The Territory of Dakota was an organized incorporated territory of the United States that existed from March 2, 1861, until November 2, 1889, when the final extent of the reduced territory was split and admitted to the Union as the states of North and South Dakota. The 7th Iowa Cavalry Regiment was a cavalry regiment that served in the Union Army during the Indian Wars. In Chapter IX of MacKinlay Kantor's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "Andersonville" (1955), the father of one of the main characters is commissioned as a lieutenant in Company G of the Seventh Iowa Cavalry. Service The 7th Iowa Cavalry was mustered into Federal service at Davenport, Iowa, for a three-year enlistment between April 27 to July 13, 1863. On September 19, 1863, it was deployed to Omaha en route to the west. In 1864, three companies of the regiments were part of Lieutenant Colonel Samuel M. Pollock's 1st Brigade of Brigadier General Alfred Sully's District of Iowa. The Fort Randall Military Post was established in 1856 to help keep peace on the frontier.
