30 By 30
30 by 30 (or 30x30) is a worldwide initiative for governments to designate 30% of Earth's land and ocean area as protected areas by 2030. The target was proposed by a 2019 article in ''Science Advances'' "A Global Deal for Nature: Guiding principles, milestones, and targets", highlighting the need for expanded nature conservation efforts to mitigate climate change. Launched by the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People in 2020, more than 50 nations had agreed to the initiative by January 2021, which has increased to more than 100 countries by October 2022, including Australia. 30 by 30 has been agreed at the COP15 meeting of the Convention on Biological Diversity. This includes the G7 and European Union. $5b funding called the “Protecting Our Planet Challenge” was announced for the initiative in September 2021. There are several kinds of protected areas, which vary by level of protection depending on the enabling laws of each country or the regulations of the international organizations involved. Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework
The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) is an outcome of the 2022 United Nations Biodiversity Conference. Its tentative title had been the "Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework". The GBF was adopted by the 15th Conference of Parties (COP15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity on 19 December, 2022. It has been promoted as a "Paris Agreement for Nature". The GBF contains 4 global goals ("Kunming-Montreal Global Goals for 2050") and 23 targets ("Kunming-Montreal 2030 Global Targets"). "Target 3" is especially referred to as the "30 by 30" target. ''Half-Earth: Our Planet's Fight for Life'' is a 2016 book by the biologist E. O. Wilson, in which the author proposes that half of the Earth's surface should be designated a human-free natural reserve to preserve biodiversity. Wilson noted that the term "Half-Earth" was coined for this concept by Tony Hiss in his '' Smithsonian'' article "Can the World Really Set Aside Half the Planet for Wildlife?" Reception Ecologist Christine Griffiths, reviewing the book in ''Science'', described Wilson's plan as an "evidence rich plea dismissing Anthropocene optimism that humanity could survive without nature".
