The album was out of print for decades, but will be reissued for Record Store Day 2021. ''The Modern Dance'' is the debut album by American rock music, rock band Pere Ubu. It was released in January 1978 by record label Blank. A 5.1 surround sound version was released as the DVD-Audio side of a DualDisc in 2005. Critical reception ''The Modern Dance'' has been critically acclaimed. Reviewing for ''The Village Voice'' in 1978, Robert Christgau wrote that "even though there's too much ''Radio Ethiopia'' and not enough 'Redondo Beach (song), Redondo Beach,'" he would be "listening through the failed stuff—the highs are worth it." In ''Christgau's Record Guide: Rock Albums of the Seventies'' (1981), he reaffirmed that "the highs are worth it, and the failed stuff ain't bad" in his revised review. Ken Tucker, writing in ''Rolling Stone'', called it vivid and exhilarating, even if "harsh and willfully ugly". ''NME'' named ''The Modern Dance'' the 11th best album of 1978. David Thomas (musician)
David Lynn Thomas (born 1953) is an American singer, songwriter and musician based in Great Britain. He was one of the founding members of the short-lived proto-punkers Rocket from the Tombs (1974–1975), in which he played under the moniker "Crocus Behemoth," and of post-punk group Pere Ubu (1975–present, intermittently). He has also released several solo albums. Though primarily a singer, he sometimes plays melodeon, trombone, musette, guitar or other instruments. Thomas has described his artistic focus as being the "gestalt of culture, geography and sound". Common themes crop up throughout much of his work, such as the US Interstate Highway system, images of roadside or "junk" tourist culture, Brian Wilson, AM radio, and many others. Allen Ravenstine
Allen Ravenstine (born May 9, 1950) is an American keyboard player, most recognized for his work in the experimental rock group Pere Ubu. In 1991, he quit music to become a commercial airline pilot. History Early years Allen Ravenstine was born on May 9, 1950. He had much exposure to music at a young age, his interest derived from his mother playing Sergei Rachmaninoff and other classical music and his father's interest in jazz and percussion records. He played the trombone in grade school but quickly lost interest. Ravenstine's first real experience as an artist came in 1971 after abandoning his college pursuits. He met visual artist Bob Bensick, who was experimenting with sending distortion into oscillators and out to a stereo system. Eventually, they discovered a way to attach lights and have them work in conjunction with the sounds being produced and decided to stage art shows. Tony Maimone
Tony Maimone (born September 27, 1952) is a bassist, producer, and recording engineer, who lives in Brooklyn, New York. He was a member of Pere Ubu from the mid-1970s to the early 1990s, often playing with drummer Scott Krauss. The duo were dubbed by a critic "one of the great unheralded rhythm sections in all of rock". He is known as one of the former members of They Might Be Giants from 1992 until 1996. Maimone also has worked with Bob Mould, Frank Black, The Mekons, They Might Be Giants, and Jon Langford. Pere Ubu is an American rock group formed in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1975. The band had a variety of long-term and recurring band members, with singer David Thomas being the only member staying throughout the band's lifetime. They released their debut album ''The Modern Dance'' in 1978 and followed with several more LPs before disbanding in 1982. Thomas reformed the group in 1987, continuing to record and tour. Describing their sound as "avant-garage," Pere Ubu's work drew inspiration from sources such as musique concrète, 60s rock, performance art, and the industrial environments of the American Midwest. Tim Wright (1952 – August 4, 2013) was an American musician. He was the original bassist with the Cleveland, Ohio band Pere Ubu, appearing on their earliest singles but leaving the band before they recorded a full-length album. Wright moved to New York City, where he joined Arto Lindsay in the no wave band DNA. He stayed with the group until they disbanded in 1982. Peter Laughner
Peter Laughner (August 22, 1952 – June 22, 1977) was an American guitarist, songwriter and singer. A native of Bay Village, Ohio, Laughner was described by Richie Unterberger as "probably the single biggest catalyst in the birth of Cleveland's alternative rock scene in the mid 1970s." Music career Laughner led a variety of groups. Among them were Mr. Charlie, Cinderella Backstreet, Peter & The Wolves, The Blue Drivers and Friction. However, his most enduring contributions were to Rocket From The Tombs and the early work of Pere Ubu. In addition to all this, he wrote for Creem magazine. Laughner was a voracious rock fan and writer, and was heavily influenced by the writings of Lester Bangs.
