Prince Edward Island Progressive Conservative Party
The Progressive Conservative Party of Prince Edward Island is one of three major political parties on Prince Edward Island. The party and its rival, the Liberals, have alternated in power since responsible government was granted in 1851. History The policies of the Liberals and Progressive Conservatives (PCs) are very similar. The major differences are in their allegiances to federal parties and in personalities. The PC Party began as the Conservative Party of Prince Edward Island, and changed its name in 1942 to reflect the development of the federal Progressive Conservative Party. Archibald John Macdonald (October 10, 1834 – August 18, 1917) was a merchant and political figure in Prince Edward Island. He represented 5th Kings in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island as a Conservative member from 1872 to 1876 and from 1879 to 1912. He was born in Panmure Island, the son of Hugh Macdonald and Catherine McDonald, and was educated at Georgetown and at the Central Academy (later Prince of Wales College) in Charlottetown. John Howatt Bell
John Howatt Bell (December 13, 1846 – January 29, 1929) was a lawyer and politician who served as the 14th premier of Prince Edward Island. Bell was born in Cape Traverse, the son of Walter Bell and Elizabeth Howatt. He was educated at Prince of Wales College and at Albert College in Belleville. After studying law, he was called to the Ontario bar in 1874 and set up practice in Ottawa, Ontario. He moved to Manitoba, was called to the bar there and set up practice in Emerson. In 1882, he married his first cousin, Helen, the daughter of Cornelius Howatt. He returned to Prince Edward Island, was called to the bar, and set up practice in Summerside. Bell entered politics in 1886 when he was elected to the province's legislative assembly as a Liberal. In 1898 he won a seat in the House of Commons of Canada as a supporter of the federal Liberals under Sir Wilfrid Laurier. George Whitefield Whitlock Bentley (December 1, 1842 – April 8, 1909) was a merchant, farmer and political figure in Prince Edward Island, Canada. He represented 4th Prince in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1879 to 1893 as a Conservative member. Born in Margate, Prince Edward Island, he was the son of Thomas Bentley and Hannah Smith, and was educated there. In 1870, he married Emma Jane Dennis. He served on the Executive Council as Commissioner of Public Works from 1887 to 1890 and as Provincial Secretary-treasurer and Commissioner of Crown Lands from 1890 to 1891. He was defeated when he ran for re-election in 1893. John Alexander MacDonald (Prince Edward Island Politician)
John Alexander MacDonald (October 21, 1838 – 1905) was a farmer and political figure in Prince Edward Island. He represented 3rd Prince in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island from 1870 to 1900 as a Conservative member. He was born in Bedeque, Prince Edward Island, the son of Angus McDonald. In 1875, he married Annie C. McKelvie. MacDonald was a justice of the peace in Indian River. He served as chairman of the board of railway appraisers and was a governor for Wales' College. Joseph-Octave Arsenault
Joseph-Octave Arsenault (August 5, 1828 – December 14, 1897) was a Canadian politician who was the first Acadian from Prince Edward Island to be named to the Senate of Canada. Born in Cascumpec, Prince Edward Island, the son of Mélème Arsenault and Bibienne Poirier, he was a teacher, and later the owner of several businesses, including two general stores and a fish company. In 1867, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island for the riding of 3rd Prince and served for 28 years. In 1895, he was appointed to the Senate representing the senatorial division of Prince Edward Island. He served until his death in Abram-Village in 1897. In 1861, he married Gertrude Gaudet.
