2023–24 Liga 1 (Indonesia)
The 2023–24 Liga 1 (also known as the 2023–24 BRI Liga 1 for sponsorship reasons) is the 14th season of the Liga 1, the top Indonesian professional league for association football clubs since its establishment in 2008. It started on 1 July 2023 and is scheduled to end on 26 May 2024. PSM Makassar are the defending champions after outpacing their closest rivals, Persija Jakarta and Persib Bandung in the 2022–23 Liga 1 season. Teams There were no teams relegated last season due to impacts related to the Kanjuruhan Stadium disaster leading to the cancellation of 2022–23 Liga 2. Liga 1 ( en, League 1), also known as BRI Liga 1 for sponsorship reasons with Bank Rakyat Indonesia, is the men's top professional football division of the Indonesian football league system. Administered by the PT Liga Indonesia Baru (), Liga 1 is contested by 18 clubs and operates on a system of promotion and relegation with Liga 2. Kanjuruhan Stadium Disaster
On 1 October 2022, a fatal human crush occurred following an association football match at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang Regency, East Java, Indonesia. Following a loss by home side Arema to rivals Persebaya Surabaya, around 3,000 Arema supporters invaded the pitch. Police said the rioting supporters attacked the players and the team officials. The police attempted to protect the players and stop the riot but the crowds clashed with the security forces. In response, riot police units deployed tear gas, which triggered a stampede of people in the stadium trying to escape from the effects of the gas. A crush formed at an exit, resulting in fans being asphyxiated. As of 24 October, 135 people were killed, and 583 others were injured.
